Intramurals Offer End To Boredom by Greg Ryder What has more active participants than any fraternity or sorority on campus? What provides both with a chance to make close friendships as well as promote a healthy mind and body? No, it's not the Hi IQ team, and it's not ladies mud wrestling. It's intramural sports, one of the most overlooked yet possibly most exciting activities on campus. Intramural sports offers a chance for you to both observe and actively participate in many different types of recreational sports. And the intramural department here at WCU offers many different types of competition. Do you like the feel of a well balanced shotgun in your hands, or the sight of a gorgeous female (or male) body chasing a ball across a swimming pool? If so then this writer suggests that you get down to the intramural office, double-quick, and get a copy of the activites list for this semester. Besides the usual staples of softball, basketball and tag football (go Medical Center) other competition is held in such areas' as skeet/trap shooting, water polo, horseshoes, and many more. Among these there is bound to be something to appeal to everyone. Besides offering a chance to do more than just sit around your dorm room studying all the time (God forbid), intramurals offers other valuable things. The games and events themselves are usually of very high quality and such competition is always exciting to watch. Also, many teams carry over from one semester to the next, and the hours of practice and playing together often creates lasting friendships. The value of these possibilities alone makes intramurals an excellent prospect for the lonely student. So, what do you think? Does the idea of head to head competition scare you? If you are anything like me, it does. No one wants to walk out onto a basketball court against a team of elongated Neanderthals and get eaten for dinner. Of course not. To help this problem, the intramural activities are divided into different leagues, and these compete within themselves to help balance the skill levels and keep the competition at its lively best. This provides a chance for everyone to give his all and not have it stuffed down his throat with a spiked volleyball. Now it's up to you. If you still want to sit in your room and vegetate (among other things) then so be it. But if you're tired of staring at that same Led Zeppelin poster at the foot of your bed, then get your tail down to the Intramural office in Reid Gym and talk to Mike Creason. Hell be able to give you information on where to sign up and other details. Hurry, before you have to start listening to those Geritol commercials.
