WCU Police advise how to stay safe on campus Ryan Gillig Staff Writer With the reality of school shootings, many people are left wondering what can they do when it comes to safety at West- ern Carolina University. Safety is a top priority for Western Carolina and not many people are aware of just how prepared West- ern Carolina is when it comes to the safety of the students. Not only does the university have proce- dures in place for active shootings, they also have procedures in place for bomb threats, crimes in progress, power outages, fires, natural disasters, general evacuations and medical emergencies. Sergeant Jacob Deal and Shane Stovall, Director of Emergency Services, have all the information when it comes to being safe on | campus. Many Western Caro- lina students and parents are worried about the Ongoing shootings that have already affected the nation this year. With this concern, Western Carolina has strategies and procedures in place to help keep students and faculty safe on campus in the event of a shooting. Police Sergeant Jacob Deal recommended all faculty and students watch the run, hide, fight video available at the Western Carolina University Police homep- age. This video highlights key elements on how to survive an active shooter, which involves finding a safe location to hide, blocking the door, turning off the lights and calling for help. Not only is the run, hide, fight video available, but the police department also conducts programing that focuses on discussion about what to do in the event of an active shooter. Sergeant Deal said, If anyone is interested in the programming, they can reach out to me or they can submit a request through our website under the programming link. Not only is there an ongo- ing concern about school shootings, but also safety in general when it comes to walking alone at night on campus to either ones car or dormitory. Sergeant Deal shed some light on how to remain safe. There are always a few pointers to follow. Sergeant Deal also said, You should always walk in well-lit areas, travel in numbers, as an attack is less likely to happen and let others know where you are or where you intend on going with an estimated time of arrival. These are the best ways to ensure the safety of students on campus. If you still do not feel safe, you can always contact the Police non-emergency line at 828-227-7301 and an officer will escort you to your intended loca- tion. One of the most impor- tant things to remember on campus is there are many blue light towers that can assist if you are ever in an emergency and it is important to know where they are located. There are a total of 39 blue light phones on campus; there is an eas- ily available map which shows all 39 locations if you are ever in need of as- sistance. The best way to travel safely on campus at night or to protect your- self in case of an emer- gency is to know what blue towers are around your location. Try to keep these in mind before you attempt walking alone at night or if there is ever a concern for public safety on Western Carolinas campus. Western Caro- lina has many procedures _ Inplace to ensure the safety of all the students and faculty members. For more information on these procedures con- tact Sergeant Jacob Deal at 828-227-3207 or Shane Stovall at 828-227-3445.
