  • March 2, 2012 4 WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 8 SPORES Catamount track program eyeing to continue recent successes Asia Buss, StaffWriter With the indoor track season ending as they begin their quest for the Southern Conference Championship, _ WCUs track stars are gear- ing up for a rigorous outdoor track season. Since last seasons out- door track team brought in second place at the Southern Conference Championship - for both the mens and wom- ens teams, expect this track season to uphold the teams successful reputation. Head coach of the track team, Danny Williamson, hopes for a closer shot at the Southern Conference Cham- pionship and believes his _ team is up for the challenge. Our goal on a yearly ba- sis is to have ourselves in a position to be able to contend for the Southern Conference ~ Team Championship both in indoor and outdoor track and - field, Williamson said. Having worked as a .. coach for WCU track and field for 28 years, William- - son looks forwatd to collab- orating with the new athletic - director, Randy Eaton. Tve been able to speak with Randy on several oc- casions and he and I share a lot of the same thoughts as where we think the athletic department should be, Wil- - liamson said. I know whats ao but thats what I expected of myself and the program that I run anyway. I wouldnt want it to be any- way else. After evaluating the teams hard effort at last years Southern Confer- ence, Williamson considers Sanford University, Elon University and Georgia Southern University to be top competitors; however, beating WCU in last years conference with first place, Appalachian State remains the top competitor for the WCU track team. This season, Williamson Stays positive on the teams chances for the Southern Conference Championship. We want to have our- selves in the position to be able to contend for a South- ern Conference Champion- ship and with the indoor conference championships coming up next week, we feel weve positioned our- selves to have a chance to make a run at the champion- ship, Williamson said. In order to prepare for the conference, Williamson has been working to raise the competitiveness in all areas of his team. What we try -to do is have a well-rounded team SO we want to be able to be strong in- every area, Wil- , liamson said. (We dont try to let one area overshadow another. Before the season begins, Williamson has set his goals high and not only wants his team to wina Ps Deid i Con- ference Ghampiosiie. but also to be named an academ- ic, all-American team. When we have those two things completed, we see how many individu- als we can have qualify for the first round of the NCAA Championships, William- son said. The teams first meet of the season will be on the road from March 16-17. The Catamounts have three home meets: the Catamount clas- sic on March 24, the WCU Invitational on April 13 and the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on April 21 and 22. Sizing up the competi- tion this year, Cheves said, ' There are 8 teams that can legitimately vonipets for the title. Chattanooga and Geor- gia Southern are the favor- ites to win this season. Ryan Michaud, Staff Writer WCU alum __ Jonathan : Zapp is considered a true fan of Western Carolina Univer- sitys athletic teams. - Zapp graduated from WCU in 2006 with a bach- elors degree in business administration and is cur- rently working and residing in Charlotte. ' J live in Charlotte now, but my job takes me on the road a lot, Zapp said. Zapp was not a collegiate | athlete at Western but he was a major fan. for the season. To be competitive ev- erywhere we go. We want to be consistent, he said. Our goal is to add another tourna- _ ment at the end of the year and make it to the NCAA | Regional. The womens golf team _ finished fourth in the South- erm Conference Champion- ship last year during head coach Mallory Hetzels first year as a head coach. The womens golf team was ranked 70th nationally, mak- ing program history. We had a mature team, Hetzel said. There are three returning seniors from last season, one transfer student, and three freshmen. Just like the mens golf team there is a good mix of experience at the college level as well as a mix of younger and older players. I have a sneaky feeling that its going to be good, Hetzel said regarding the up- coming season. The Lady Catamounts have won a tournament the last 11 years. Winning is so rare in golf, Hetzel said, however his goal is to continue the run and win a tournament this season. The Lady Catamounts rat A aale sports growing up. I played softball, soc- cer, and baseball for many years, Zapp said. My fa- vorite sport would be Cata- mount football, I love going to their home games. Director of the Cata- mount club, Gorham Brad- ley, described WCU alumni Jonathan Zapp as a SUPER FAN, | _ Zapp attends most, if not all, home football games. We usually make it to most of them. There is prob- ably only one or two we are not able to go to, Zapp said. Zapp and his fianc enjoy attend- ing football games and set- ting up their Catamount club tailgate. We shave some exciting plans for this new season, Zapp said. We are looking for a new sound system and plasma screen TVs. Its go- ing to be pretty neat. With a new chancellor, athletic director, and head coach, Zapp is excited. I love the changes. ' Nothing against Chip Smith or the old administration, but I think it is time for a change and a different way of look- ing at the picture and I think most alumni feel this way, Zapp _ She is currently the second best in the Southern Confer- ence. Freshman golfer, Sofie Kvarnstrom, is also a great asset to the Western Carolina ~ womens golf team. She is the second best freshman in the Southern Conference as well as the fifth best overall womens ge grams goals consist of the general, We just look to improve, Hetzel said.
