  • WCnewsmagazine 2 Third time is not a charm as Cats lose to UNGG in first round of SoCon Tournament By Andy Gambill + Wenewsmagazine After defeating UNCG twice in the regular season, Western Carolina _give the Spartans a 69-65 victory, improving their record to 12-18, was favored to beat the Spartans again in the first round of the SoCon Hines was just too much inside for the Cats as he had 13 points in the tournament. The Spartans proved just how hard itis to beat a team three times _ first half and 13 in the second half. Hines shot much better at the free throw line in a season, though, as they upset the Catamounts 69-65. Kyle Hines was unstoppable inside as the 10" seed Spartans held off the 7" seed Catamounts in the end. Hines, a first-team SoCon performer, finished the night with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals as he dominated the Catamount front line. Kevin Oleksiak chipped in 13 points, 5 assists and 3 steals for the Spartans as he shot 4 for 6 from long-range. Seniors Corey Muithead and David Berghoefer tried their best to will the Cats to victory, but itjust wasn't enough. Muithead scored 25 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out 5 assists, while Berghoefer had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Kyle Greathouse also had a good game as he had 14 points for the Cats. Muirhead will finish his career 33 all-time at Western in scoring with 1,025 points while Berghoefer finishes 23 with 1,180. Berghoefer finished 11 in rebounding with 688 boards and 10 in field goal percentage as he shot .497 for his career. The Cats led at halftime 32:30 but UNCG used a 16-5 opening second half run to take a controlling 47-37 lead with 14:11 left in the game. The Spartans did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game even though the Cats cut the deficit to one on three different occasions in the last seven and a half minutes After a Greathouse three- pointer cut the deficit to 47-40, Muirhead took over and tried to lead the Cats to victory as he has done many times in the last couple of weeks, Muirhead scored 14 of the Cats next 17 points as the lead was cut to three with 5:09 left. Muirhead dished out one of his five assists on the next play to cut the lead to one point. than he did in the regular season as he hit of 7, and that was a major difference in this game and the previous two that the Spartans lost to the Cats. Early in the game, though, itwas all Catamounts as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Negus McKenna had 5 of the 10 points, but the Spartans went on their own 22-8 run to take their first lead at 24-18. The Cats locked down on defense and held the Spartans scoreless for the next six minutes. The Cats 12-0 run gave them a 30-24 lead. Hines broke the drought with an old- fashioned three-point play, and eventually Oleksiak hit a three-pointer with 5 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 32-30 and give the Spartans the momentum going into halftime. While Wester lost the game, they did not lose the momentum that the program has established over this season. Coach Hunter convinced a team that had very little inside depth that it could finish second in the SoCon North division. Hunter has tumed the program around, and the next couple of years should be even better. The Cats set three season records this year with Coach Hunter's long-distance heavy offense, The Cats set the school Fecord for 3-pointers made in a season (221), S-pointers attempted (625), and 3-point made per game (7.97). With one season left, Greathouse has positioned himself for fa second-place finish in 3-pointers made iin a career at WCU. Currently, Greathouse stands at 5" alltime in school history with 157 threes after he hit 64 3-pointers this year (7 best single season total in WCU history). Greathouse trails first-place holder and current Catamount assistant Anguell McCollum for first place by 88 three-pointers. McCollums total of 245 is probably out of reach for Greathouse but Casey Rogers second-place total of 207 is well within sight. Greathouse is not the only Cat who made record-book noise this year as McKenna produced the 6" best single season 3-pt percentage in school history. McKenna shot .430 from long distance. While the Cats lose three seniors (Muirhead, The Cats stayed within five points of the Spartans until Muirhead hit a Berghoefer, and Jared Outing) they bring in a great recruiting class that has a 'ay-up with less than 20 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two. On the next lot more height than the current team has.
