SUNDAY HIGHWAY 19-23 SYLVA Hunter Library Storehous of information Robert Culp, Director of the physical plant announced that the new addition of Hunter Library is proceeding on schedule. "It's run very smoothly," Culp said, "Mostly because of excellent weather. The addition should be finished by mid-October 1981, with renovation for the existing section of Hunter to be finished by mid-January, 1982. Students should be able to take advantage of the new features, including the increased study space, larger capacity, and all night study areas soon afterwards. At present the library houses over 270,579 separate volumes, with 215,858 different titles. This is an increase of 13,160 volumes and 11,651 titles over last year. The library also contains over 40,000 bound periodicals under 2,000 titles and 28,400 pieces of microfilm under 1,500 different titles. Current subscriptions in Hunter Library are 2,292 under a total of 4,000titles. Another specialized area of the library is the 110 volume cassette collection, containing what was termed as an "excellent jazz selection," along with all of Shakespeare's plays in recordings. In addition, there is a Kurzweil Reading Machine which converts typed copy into synthetic speech, located in the basement. Some of the more interesting volumes in Hunter Library are not found in the stacks, but in the small section on the ground floor labeled, "Archives-Special Collections." By definition, Archives contain the "noncurrent records of an organization or institution preserved because of their continuing value." Hunter Library's Archives contain a massive amount of journals, letters, diaries, photographs, and recordings of people associated with the Western North Carolina area and WCU in particular. Specific works contained in the Archives include: papers from U.S. Congressman Zebulon Weaver from the years 1917-1947, the William Holland Thomas Collection, which consists of material from his service as both a Cherokee Indian agent and Civil War Soldier, and the Horace Kephart Collection of the naturalist's works who spent many years living in the Smokeys writing about his experiences. Our Southern Highlanders is his most well known book. In addition the Archivists are in the process of compiling a local history/genealogy collection. Contained in this work will be microfilmed records of counties in Western North Carolina, a central index for books on genealogy throughout the library, and census records for counties in Western North Carolina. The Special Collection department of the facility includes manuscript collections, maps, photographs, book collections, newspapers going back to the Neo-classical period in England, and oral history tapes. The Archives/Special Collection's posted hours are from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Friday. 1980 theatre include six plays The Speech and Theatre Arts department has several productions and activities on tap for the upcoming year.
