ENTERTAINMENT A Guide To Upcoming Local Music Spotlighted Artists Playing Soon Near You By Carrie Eidson_ We Intern Miriam Alien Singer-songwriter and dancer Miriam Allen offers one of the most unique shows in the upcoming weeks. Her sound combines folk and blues with traditional Spanish tunes and she sings her songs half in Spanish and half in English. She blends the music she learned growing up in South Carolina with the sounds she picked up when traveling through South America working as a street performer, Now based in Asheville, Allen has performed in Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, and Mexico, Miriam Allen will be at the Back Room (Flat Rock Wine Shop) on ape) L balance a oulesy pop song with a haunting ballad filled with broad dissonant chords, making their ertoire ee ay highly aned: the band when oot moved to ee ay at their they founded the group, and the remaining members, David Barrett, Danny Resner, Mike Ackley, and Nathan Ribner, are all in their early twenties. The Baker Family will be celebrating the release of second CD, Bakers Can't Be Choosers, at the Grey Eagle on April 9. _ Brian McGee | Brian McGeeisa: singer-songwriter who tours the East Coast both as The Baker Family will perform at their CD release party at the Grey Eagle, ios 9 part of his band The Hollow Speed and as a solo performer. McGee started out in a Pennsylvania punk band called Plow United but began studying country music following _ his move to Asheville in 1999, As a result, his songs combine element from country and punk music to create a unique alternative country sound. Local music critics have compared McGees sound to artists as diverse as Elvis, Johnny Cash, - Woody Guthrie and Joey Ramone but have been unified in their praise of McGee and his bands self titled EP. Grey Milk Grey Milk is a punk influenced folk-rock band originally from Massachusetts who recently made the move to become part of the Athens, Georgia music scene. The band released their first EP Strong Bones and Teeth in 2006 and their second record City Parks _ After Dark in 2008. Their sound can vary from mellow stripped- down acoustic folk to fast paced Photo sul feedback-laced punk, but always remains danceable and catchy. On their MySpace page the bands tagline quips Ill trade perfect pitch for sincerity any day. Thats a fair Statement considering how singer Jesse Houles vocals sometimes collapse at the height of some of the bands more impassioned songs. It doesnt matter though. If you're looking for a smooth, fully harmonized sound, Grey Milk probably isnt for you. If, on the other hand, you can dig a band that delivers a high-energy, thoroughly sincere show, imperfect pitch and all, you may just love this band. Grey Milk is payne neers a on oe il, R Rebecca Pronsky Rebecca Pronsky does folk s mgs ] Town. She traces her influences to Griffin, and dark sound lead to a strong _comparison with alt-country darling Neko Case. Based in Brooklyn, Pronsky has become a favorite of the Brooklyn independent music scene, but is also gaining national acclaim. The Philadelphia City Paper picked her Departures and Arrivals EP as . one of the top ten albums of 2008. Ina world where all marriages are arranged by a matchmaker, Tzeitel is able to arrange a marriage for herself with the poor tailor Motel becomes teacher engaged to a radical Perchick (John R. Raines) who tries to inspire Communism against the Czar, and Chava marries Russian soldier Fyedka (Jon Cowart.) Their father must challenge his own beliefs and trust his own good nature and God to help his family survive the Russians forcing the Jews to leave their homes. Kennedy, who stars as Tevya, does an incredible job of capturing Tevyas heartfelt nature and hilarious wit, particularly with lines. like May He smite me (with money) and may I never recover! and his memorable performance of a I Were a Rich Man. The Fiddler, played by William Ritter, left us following his amusing movements with laughs and impressed gaping mouths. The entire cast really caught the particularly Gill, DeSoto and Gonzales as Tevyas oldest, along with their people on many different levels and in many different ways. It is love interests Evans, Raines, and Cowart. The choreography, under the direction of New York Ballets former principal dancer Christopher dAmboise, was stunning. Every actor leapt into beautiful sequences for Tradition, The Dream and the Wedding Dance that could only come from a Tony Award nominee like d Amboise. The play leaves us fecling like we want to be part of the community of Anatevka while making us grateful that we are not (hopetully) subject to an arranged marriage. This year will feature Fred Hamilton and Kat Williams. All events at the festival are free and open to the public. This will be a great opportunity for folks interested in jazz, or music in general to learn some new things. Tramiton will also be teaching ajazz im rovisation A o Host Opera Rigoletto on April 14 By Bessie Dietrich-Goggins WC Contributing Writer Western Carolina University will present the opera Rigoletto, produced by the Asheville Lyric Opera, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the main performance hall of the Fine and Performing we Center, with three WCU students in supporting roles. Rigoletto, a three-act opera set in Mentua during the 1500s, is about a mans struggle with his position in life. What makes Rigoletto one of the staples of the operatic repertoire is that it engages Photo Submitted Arts and WCUs Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series, is the second Asheville Lyric Opera to show in the Fine and Performing Arts Center. Performers will sing in Italian, without amplification, with English translations appearing on a screen above the stage. This opera, in particular, is interesting because it deals with characters who are making potent decisions about their lives in response to the situations they find themselves in, sometimes by choice and sometimes not by choice, said Kristen Yarborough, Asheville Lyric Operas company manager. Nonetheless, all of the characters make active, direct decisions about their lives and are willing to pay the consequences for them, even death. Rigoletto also is exciting because Verdi chose to make the title character a hunchback jester, not a romantic hero, which is often the case in opera. a love story, a morality play tragedy all rolled into. one, stage director David Carl Tou The characters in this o not archetypes; they are flawe ind complex people who are simply living their lives and must face up to the consequences of their actions. Based on the play, Giuseppe Verdis Rigoletto was _ first performed in 1851 in Venice. Baritone Mark Owens Davis, who most recently appeared in the Asheville Lyric Opera as Capulet in Romeo and Juliet and specializes in the Verdi repertoire, will play the role of Rigoletto. Brian Cheney, acclaim for several of his operatic roles, will play the Duke. In the role of Gilda is Emily Douglass, who won the 2006 Meistersinger International Vocal Competition in Graz, Austria, and currently teaches voice at the University of Tennessee and Maryville College. : o _.
