  • Friday, December 11, 1964 New Music Group Formed In America First steps have been taken to develop a nationwide network of Jeunesses Musicales chapters on the campus of accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States. These chapters will be allied to "Carnegie Hall-Jeun- esses Musicales," a new national organization, which brings the United States into the ranks of the worldwide Jeun-' esses Musicales movement. The new organization plans by stages to make the Jeunesses Musicales program as comprehensive here as it is elsewhere in the world. A letter of introduction acquainting colleges with the ways in which they can readily identify themselves with Carnegie Hall-Jeunesses Musicales, together with a description of the worldwide movement and its organizations, have been sent to both the Director of Student Activities and the Chairman of the Music Department of each institution. Also sent was information on how to establish a Jeunesses Musicales chapter on campus and how to sponsor a concert by a Jeunesses Musicales artist from abroad this coming spring. Jeunesses Musicales is a movement which makes good music more readily accessible to youth and young adults between the ages of 15 and 30. It stimulates their involvement in music as listeners and encourages their participation in the musical life of the country as performers, composers and critics. The movement began in 1940 in Belgium through the efforts of the late Marcel Cuve- lier. Director General of the Philharmonica Society of Brussels. Almost simultaneously, a similar movement developed in France under the leadership of Rene Nicoly, who is today Honorary President of the worldwide movement, and in combination with the Belgian group, led to the formation of the Federation Internationale des Jeunesses Musi cales. Though its activity may vary from country to country, its basic pattern is the presentation of concert series, supplemented by the formation of youth ensembles, the encouragement of gifted young artists through competitions and international exchange and the publication of a national journal. Some of the national organizations operate music camps, publish new music and issue recordings. A petition to form a chapter may be submitted under the signatures of at least four students from each of the four undergraduate classes and endorsed by an officer of the Division of Student Life (or its equivalent) and the Chairman of the Music Department (or the Director of Concerts). Carnegie-Hall Jeunesses Musicales is being formed in the United States under this name to indicate both the role Carnegie Hall has played in preparing the ground for the movement and its active interest in helping to ensure its success. A grant from the Ford Foundation has made it possible for Carnegie Hall-Jeunesses Musicales to come legally into existence as a non-profit entity and to pursue its immediate objectives of 1) establishing local chapters at colleges and universities and 2) continuing the international artists exchange which Carnegie Hall has inaugurated.
