Question to Kelly Harper: What are your overall thoughts about the game? - Well first of all Vanderbilt is a very intelligent and very scrappy team, and they were able to take advantage of every mistake we made. I thought we had a lot of mental breakdowns, especially in the first half, which game them all Emily Clarke keeps the ball away Brittany Ferguson keeps an eye on the ball while guarding a Vanderbilt op outside the arc, coming back to be within a point with eight minutes left in the first half, but was not able to close to gap as Vanderbilt opened up an I11-2 shooting spree to lead 29-18 at the break. Following halftime, _ the Commodores continued off of their momentum from the first twenty minutes of play, leading at times by as much as eighteen points. Western Carolina scored seven straight points to pull within 41-29 . and force a timeout by Commodores coach Melanie Balcomb at the 12:22 mark. WCU Post Game Comments the momentum going into halftime and following the break. I wish we would have used the shot clock better and had a better showing but the girls had a very good year. It is just a tough balance right to be proud of what you have done because the kids are so disappointed in the loss. Question to Lauren Powell: In regards to the loss, can you point to a certain aspect of game. that Vanderbilt was good at or that you or teammates were bad at that could have contributed to the end result? - | think it was a combination of both. We did not shoot well, we did not get the baskets that we normally had all season, we were 28% from the field, and whether it was Photo by Justin Caudell from a Commodore defender. Vanderbilts defense or something else | dont know but when your not shooting the ball well, you always have to make sure that your good on defense in response, and we were not. Question to Kelly Harper: With about 8 minutes left in the first half, it was a close game, only a three point difference at one time, what happened? - Immediately after that, we had three mental breakdowns on the defensive end that gave them 2 3s and a lay-up and one of our keys on defense was not to let them have the easy shots, which was no lay-ups or leaving open shots on the outside and those three easy shots in a row killed us and we could not score on the rebound, Follow Up Question to Kelly Harper: In terms of your team not being able to score, do you think it was nerves and first playoff game jitters for the team or something else? - Sometimes you just miss shots, Vanderbilt also had a very good defense which just kept us off balance. We were more aggressive in the second half but just could not keep up. Photo by Justin Caudell A Western Carolina Womens Basketball Coach shows his frustration following 73-44 loss to Vanderbuilt.
