  • Febuary 21, 2007 cont. from pg. 11 The game got heated at times, with both teams playing very aggressive and physical. Its February. In February, the intensity goes up. You are approaching the last month of the year so its truly up another notch. Its war, said Hunter. Hunter believes that knocking off the top team in the North division of the SoCon has boosted the morale of the entire Catamount team, and says that his team has been playing the best basketball that it has played all season long, especially in the last few games. For a few games now, we have SDOre = Codwumn By: Joel Gerber sports editor You need one more, Coach, the referee said to Coach Norman Dale. It was like the referees words were a stone thrown at a brick wall of the coachs determination. With an icy stare of pure grit the coach al- most snarled back My teams on the floor! The scene above is easily rec- ognizable from the greatest sports. movie ever: Hoosiers, starring Gene _ Hackman as Coach Norman Dale of the Indiana Hoosiers. In the scene, Hackman has a discipline problem with one of his players on a team of five. Instead of indulging the spoiled player, the coach boldly elected to play with just four. I site this example because Western Carolina Mens bas- ketball recently lost two more schol- arship athletes, which brings them to been growing as a team. We have good chemistry and some good positive en- ergy right now, and our guys are excit- ed about playing, said Hunter, Were hungry, and I think we are playing hun- gry. We are playing with a lot of emo- tion and intensity. After three consecutive home games, the Catamounts will hit the road for a three-game stretch that in- cludes trips to Georgia Southern, The Citadel, and College of Charleston. The Catamounts will return home on Feb 21 for a showdown with UNC-G. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:03 p.m. Spoiled basketball players, generally have trouble fitting into a team dynamic game to give fowls and set screens. Most recently, two freshmen quit the team in guard Mike Porrini and Camden Miller. They quit be- cause they thought they were better than Western, that these kids were too good to play here. They felt like as soon as they quit, the scholarship offers would come pouring in. Hey, three on the season. We re-miot quitestheyve Sper a yeutnway from high Hoosiers, but were getting close with school, why not just declare for the eight eligible players for the rest of the season. Head Coach Larry Hunter brings something to Westerns basket- ball program that has never been here before: recruiting prowess. Coach Hunter may be new in Cullowhee, but hes been seen nearly all there is to see in coaching. Hes been coach- ing for almost three decades, posting 23 winning seasons and 11 NCAA tournament appearances. Not to in- tentionally draw out the mans resume, but he ranks 13th for wins for an ac- tive coach(he just moved up one with Bob Knight retiring). _ With a coach like this youd think players would not only be will- _ing to sign here, but to play there hearts out for us every game. WRONG. This seasons trend for the mens bas- ketball team: the better the recruit, the worse the attitude. It all started back on Decem- ber 13th when all SoCon big man Nick Aldridge threw a tantrum and stormed off the practice court in a fit of profanity, tears, and sniffles. In _ practices, Aldridge would swear di- rectly to the coachs face, do only the work he wanted to do, and be gener- ally uncooperative. He got away with this kind of behavior as long as he did because he was putting up just under 20 points a game. When he finally stormed off for the last time(he did this about once a week), Coach Hunter decided to let him walk. Aldridge has since signed with the University of Cincinnati. Aldridge elected instead of starting every game for four years and averag- ing a double-double, to come off the bench for eight to ten minutes every NBA draft and go pro? They re clear- ly lottery picks. And why not? Porrini was listed in PARADE magazines top 40 fresh- men in the country.:..by himself. The list is what youd expect, Kevin Love, O.J.. Mayo, Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose, etc. Then at the bottom directly quoted, as commented by Mike: Have yo had the opportunity to watch Mike Porrini play? If not you will not only in college but the NBA as well... I hate to say it Mike, but be- ing ranked freshman number 548 isnt going to help your draft status, neither is shooting under 25% from the floor, or the fact that you just quit on Coach Hunter. Herein lies the ever-present debate in college basketball recruit- ing: do you go after the superstar, pri- ma donna players who think theyre a gift to the game of basketball, or do you recruit the guys who are going to work hard every day? Basketball is a group effort, and no single player can be above the team. Western Carolina Basketball may have lost some young talent, but what we have is an unmatchable work ethic and love for the game. Weve got eight guys that really give it there all every game and every practice, and its starting to pay off. Everyone wrote us off after these players quit, but were proving were still a team to be reckoned with in the Southern Conference. So whos going to be our Jim- my Chitwood(back to my Hoosiers reference...)? Whos going to want the ball for the final shot to win the championship? All of them do. Western Carolinian SPORTS Page 12 2008 OFTBALL PREVIEW Preseson All-SoCon players Stephaine Beatty, Lauren Ross, and Mollie Fowler ERA of 1.31 in Gonterchioe: By: Jason Lineberger Infielders Stepha- staff writer nie Beatty and Mollie Fowler also - made the second team. Both have been successful hitters, with Beatty setting school records for hits and doubles, and Fowler hitting three walk-off homeruns last season. Western has a good mix of new and experienced talent, and expects to use those experienced players to lead the team this sea- son, while young players look to develop their talent: but still make Its that time of year again. The cold winter months are quick- ly dissipating and turning over to spring. February is already nearly half over, and the thoughts of warmer weather weigh on our minds. With the change in weather come the familiar sounds of ping- ing bats and the crack of the leath- er. Softball is almost here. These sounds are all too familiar to the Lady Catamounts softball team. For months now the team has been preparing for the up- coming season ahead. Hopes are high and Western looks to make a serious run in the Southern Confer- ence. WA, ahh mond, 7 While expectations are high, the Catamounts will have a tough road to tread. . The South- ern Conference includes some tal- ented opponents. Last season, the Chattanooga Lady Mocs won their ninth regular season conference title, and look to be the preseason front runners to do it again. Col- lege of Charleston and Georgia Southern also look to have impres- Sive squads, as well as Elon and Furman. In a conference loaded with potential, each game for the Lady Catamounts is important. Any team could pose a threat to West- erm, So down the stretch the Cats must find ways to expose the other teams weaknesses, as well as use their own strengths to win tough ball games. If youre itching to see how the Catamounts fair this year, the wait is almost over. The Lady Cats start the season away from home in Columbia against the South Caro- lina Gamecocks February 13 at 4:00 pm. Western does not open up at home however until March 15 in a double header against Flor- ida Gulf Coast at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively. You can follow Westerns games online at cata- mountsports.com. As some first or second year students may not know, the Cata- mount softball program has only been in existence two years. In those two years however, the Lady Cats have proved themselves to be a major threat in and out of confer- ence. In the 2006 season, Western surprised everyone by winning the SoCon regular season title, posting an impressive 16-4 record in con- ference. Last season, new _ head coach Christine Hornak took over the squad and coached Western to first ever conference tournament wins. With a year under her belt and a slew of talent returning, Hor- nak and the Cats look to improve on last seasons record. The Lady Catamounts start the season with four Preseason All- Conference picks. Those players include Lauren Ross who remark- ably made both the first and second teams intwo different positions, first team at first base and second team at pitcher. Ross had an impressive season last year at pitcher, with an an immediate impact on the dia- _ a TO Oe aa SINS SSR
