Jasons Lyric was shown at the UC Theatre Tuesday, February 12 as part of the Black History Month festivi- ties. The film is about a young man who falls in love with a young woman named Lyric, and who must face his family history and crazy father before he can face the future. Although the plot sounds inspiring movie reviews thought differently. The movie is so dense with big themes strung together that character development suffers. And the emotional sum is less than the interconnection of its Tragedy 101 parts. Lisa Schwarz- baum wrote for Entertainment Weekly. If you thought that review was bad, look what The New York Times movie reviewer, Caryn James had to say about the film. The Organization of Ebony Students along with the Fitness Center will be co-sponsoring the aero- bics class. This class will be unlike any other. Participants will be working out to different beats of hip-hop and reggae music.. The title Jasons Lyric says a lot about whats wrong with this picture. Jason is the name of the hero and Lyric the name of the woman he loves. The phrase Jasons Lyric makes it sound as if he owns her instead. Thats just the first of several thoughtless problems in a muddled film that takes a standard urban action movie and adds a veneer of overwrought romance. wrote Caryn James for The New York Times movie review. d Although the critics didnt have many nice things to say about the film, it may be something to look into. The inspirational theme of ro- mance and sacrifice may be just enough to make up for the obvious flaws. The Organization of Ebony Stu- dents is co-sponsoring a seminar in the Grand Room at the UC on Wednesday, February 14 at 11:00 a.m. to notify stu- . dents about Sickle Cell Disease. Sickle Cell Disease is a pain- ful, inherited disorder that causes the red blood cells to look like sickles or slender poles. According to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Inc., about 1 in 1,000 people are born in the USA with the disease. That is 0.10% or 272,000 people in the USA have the disease. So, whats happening the rest of | February? A Hip-Hop and Reggae aero- bics class will be held at the Reid Gym on Wednesday, February 20 from 6:00- 7:30 p.m. A game of cultural Jeopardy will be held Thursday, February 21 in the Multipurpose Room A at 7:30 p.m. to exercise students minds. Questions like Who was the first Afri- can American female in space? Who invented the traffic light? could pos- sibly appear within the night. These are just a few examples of the trivia ques- tions that will be posted about Black History.
