We have played without Kyle before, but this time it was different. We all felt like we needed him there with us, even if it was just to cheer us on, said McKenna. Commentary: The suitcase campus By Zachary Coburn * WCnewsmagazine During the span of three days this past week, | noticed something at a Western sporting event that | have grown accustomed to over the past four yearsa half-full Ramsey Center and people leaving the game before is over. | have always wondered why more people do not come to Catamount sporting events other than football. One reason | believe that there is little fan support at Catamount athletics is because this Campus is considered a suitcase campus. Another way to interpret it is as a Monday -Thursday campus because once Thursday night and Friday come around, everyone packs up and heads home for the weekend. A lot of big-name schools actually come to Cullowhee on the weekend. For example, 2 schools from the Southeastern Conference, University of South Carolina and Auburn University, have played basketball games in the Ramsey Center on Friday nights over the last 2 years.. Womens soccer has. a number of games on Fridays, and softball and baseball teams start weekend series on Friday night. People say that there is nothing to do here on the weekend or even during the week, but | beg to differ. | have rarely gone home on weekends in college, jand | must say, it has been quite an experience to see schools of the ACCs and SECs caliber come to Cullowhee. Over the past four years, | have watched an are very close. They al e for Kyle and were extroniely shaker aie upon hearing the initial news of Kyles accident. The players have visited and talked with Kyle and are comforted as we all are in knowing that he and Jamie are recovering well, stated Catamount head NBA player in former Catamount Kevin Martin, have seen the Lady Catamount basketball team win the Southern Conference Tournament in the spring of 2005, and covered both the Lady Catamount Soccer team winning the Conference Tournament in the fall of 2005 and the Lady Catamount Softball team win the Southern Conference in their inaugural season. | have also seen the lows of certain Catamount sports, most recently being the Catamount football team's disastrous 2-9 season that saw them lose nine straight games to finish the season. | have also seen the Lady Catamount volleyball team not have a winning season in my four years here. Some other events that come to mind can last April before friends, family and his former coach in front of a packed crowd at Hennon Stadium. : You cannot say that it is too expensive to go to a sporting event on campus or that,there is a lack of promotions handed out because all you have to do Cat Card; | do not know about the rest of you, but whenever | hear the word free, | know | cannot get a better deal. be interpreted as either cool or inspirational, such as ; M having the #1 collegiate golfer in the nation play in : the little town known as the whee. He believes that his Catamount squad is improving in each game they play. We will miss Kyle and the many tangible and intangible qualities he brings to our team. However, the players realize he will not be with us for a while, and they have to move forward as best we can. Our team is working extremely hard, and we are improving, said Coach Hunter. Since the accident, Greathouse _ still manages to come to practice every day. However, Coach Hunter believes that it is too soon to put any timetable on when Greathouse will be back in action. It is still a little soon to be thinking about Kyles return to playing this season. We do not want to rush him in any way, and we want to make sure he is healing properly. Kyle and his doctors will make those determinations as we move forward in the next couple of weeks, said Hunter. Several Catamount players have seen and often spoken to Greathouse since the accident. McKenna says that Greathouse seems to be doing a lot better. He comes to practice every day, and its a miracle to know that he is doing a lot better, said McKenna. Still seeing him in the gym after being in such serious condition is an inspiration to us all. The promotions department of athletics has done an incredible job of coming up with great ideas, such as their work with Sonic in supplying you, the fans, with free cherry limeades whenever a lady catamount soccer player scores the first goal of the match or a free sonic blast for every time that a lady catamount softball player or catamount baseball player hits the first home run of the game. With this year's new. slogan being Get in the whee, wehas devoted a lot of free t-shirts at the t-shirts that | is going to} ing with that pro- athletes og that you will not be disappointed because not only will it give you bonding time with your friends, but you get some pretty cool promotions and some free entertainment. #e+ newsmagazine ||? 3
