Storybook season continues for Lady Cats By Ryan Sarda * WCnewsmagazine Starting 2006 with two consecutive losses was a hard thing to endure for the Lady Cats. However, they have quickly erased those two straight losses with four consecutive victories over conference opponents. The Lady Cats have surged from the bottom to the top of the Southern Conference standings and continue to destroy each opponent who has stepped in their way. The College of Charleston was no different because the Catamounts defeated the Cougars 64-52, marking the programs 500" win in history. The Ramsey Center was jam- packed with fans for the afternoon battle between the Cats and the Cougars. With the Catamounts victory on Education Day, Western has defeated the College of Charleston in nine of their ten previous meetings. . Despite only having one player in double figures, the Catamounts soared to their fifth consecutive victory and moved to 7&2 in the Southern Conference. Junior Ashley Pellom scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, nailed 5-of-6 free-throws and also compiled six assists, giving her 220 for her career. Junior Monique Dawson | contributed. with nine points, while Brooke Johnson, Chevon Keith and ea) Powell each had eight for WCU. Western went on a 16-to-2 first half run and held the Cougars scoreless for the first nine minutes of the second half, en route to a 23-to-4 spurt, which helped them pull away for th12-point victory. The Catamounts had a slow start as the game Catamounts Avenge Earl ed Ryan Sarda WCnewsmagazine On their first game in 2007, the Lady Catamounts were defeated by the Elon Phoenix in Burlington 54-49. Eight games later, the Phoenix and the Cats would duke it out again, - this time in Cullowhee. The Catamounts cruised to their seventh straight victory when they defeated the Phoenix 77-66. Sophomore transfer student Brooke Johnson scored a career high with 22 points as she helped the surging Catamounts to the 11-point } victory. Johnson almost shot the ball perfectly ~ from the floor shooting 6-for-7 from the field with three 3-pointers, and she also shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw stripe. Joining Johnson in double digits for the Catamounts was sophomore Lauren Powell, with 15 points, and junior Ashley Pellom, who finished with 13. Pellom also dished out four assists, which moved her onto the WCU list with eight all-time. The Catamounts jumped out to an early lead, using an 11-to-2 run to pull ahead by opened. The Cougars were able to take a 12-5 lead just five minutes into the contest. College of Charleston was able to extend that seven- -point lead to a 13-point with a 24-11 lead with 9:50 to play in the opening period. Immediately following the 9:50 mark, the Catamounts erased the 13- point deficit and surged to a 16-to-2 run to take their first lead of the contest. With the Cougars leading by one to start the second half, it was time for the Catamounts to do what they had done in their previous four games. It was time for the Lady Cats to turn up the heat and the intensity, and they did just that cruising on a 23-to-4 run and jumping out to an 18-point lead with 7:51 left to play in the contest. The Catamounts held the College of Charlestons shot 0-for-7 from the field, as they were held scoreless for the first nine minutes of the second half. The Catamounts turned up the heat on defense, forcing the Cougars to ten turnovers during their run. - The Cougars were able to cut the deficit to 12 on three separate occasions, but that was as close as the Cougars could get to the Lady Cats. The Catamounts defense was the decisive unit in the contest. At the end of the first half, the Catamounts had 12 turnovers, and the Cougars had just nine. In the second half, however, the Cats had only seven while the Cougars committed nine. The Catamounts also out-performed the Cougars from the charity stripe shooting 24-of-32 for the game, while the Cougars were just 9-of-16. The win against the College of Charleston marked the 10, 22- 12, with four minutes remaining in the first half. Elon raced back and scored 12 consecutive points to put them back in front, 26-24. Then, the Catamounts soared, ending the first half on a 14-to-2 run and leading by 10, 38-28, at halftime. From that point forward, the Catamounts never looked back, as they soared to the 11-point victory in the whee. - Rebounding, shooting and free-throws were the: difference in the Catamounts defeat of the Phoenix. The Lady Catamounts out-rebounded > their opponent 39-31 and shot a season's best 53.1 percent from the field. On the defensive end, the Cats held the Phoenix to 36 percent shooting throughout the entire game, and the Phoenix also finished with a dreadful 33 percent from downtown. WCU connected on 7-of-11 from the 3-point line and finished the game with a 63.6 percentage from downtown. The Catamounts shot 18-of-24 from the charity stripe and finished with a 75 percent performance. The Phoenix shot 9-of-10 from the free-throw line, but the Catamounts got to the y Loss against Elon with a Victory end of the first half of the SoCon season iF the Lady Cats. Now its time for Round 2. Earlier this season, the Catamounts beat the Wofford Terriers 76-67 in Spartanburg. The second time around had the same resultanother victory for the Catamounts The Lady Catamounts destroyed the Terriers 79- 65, marking their sixth consecutive victory of the season. Junior Ashley Pellom scored a game-high 18 points against the Terriers. She scored 14 of those 18 points during a critical 28-to-7 first half run conducted by the Catamounts, which put the Catamounts up by as much as 23. The Catamounts never looked back from that point on. Pellom shot 6-of-7 from the field as well as a perfect 5-of-5 outing at the free-throw stripe. Junior Chevon Keith also played well for the Cats because she recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Brooke Johnson added 11 with seven boards, and junior Monique Dawson shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and finished with ten. Senior Lynsie Lamitie finished one point shy of her career high, finishing the game with nine points. The Catamounts next battle will be looking to defeat the Elon Phoenix who handed the Catamounts their first loss in 2007 at Burlington. This time the tables have turned, and it is the Phoenix who has to make the drive to Cullowhee to face the rejuvenated Catamounts. If Ey, ad sf Stripe more often and when they needed it the most. Seven victories in a row have made the Catamounts a force to be reckoned with in the Southern Conference. The win keeps the Lady Cats tied with Chattanooga for first place in the Southern Conference, with each posting a 9&2 SsoCon record. With an 8&2 Davidson Wildcat squad just a half game behind the Mocs and the Cats, it makes the Catamounts next game, which is against those Wildcats, even more important. if the Catamounts win, they will remain at- the top of the Southern Conference standings. lf they fall, they will fall to either second or third.
