  • 28 WCnewsmagazine WCU baseball team stays hot despite cold weather By Zachary Colburn + wenewsmagazine Despite freezing temperatures and a game in the snow, Westem Carolina closed their 9-game home stand with their 9 straight win, which included a sweep of the Wofford Terriers March 24-26 at Hennon Stadium. The sweep improves record to 15-9 and 4-2 in the Souther Conference. On a cold Friday night in Cullowhee, Western gave the 197 fans that braved the cold weather a game that involved two big innings. The Catamounts were first on the scoreboard in the first inning that started on a single by Sophomore Barrett Shaft, followed by a Steven Strausbaugh walk. Shaft scored on an RBI single by Trey McDaniel to take the early 1-0 lead. Wofford tied the game in the top of the 5 courtesy of the long ball. The Terriers extended their lead in the 6", scoring six runs on only three hits fora 7-1 lead. In the home half of the inning, Western trimmed the lead to five (7- 2), thanks to a sacrifice fly by Blake Murphy that scored Strausbaugh from 3" base. Wofford took that run back in the top of the 7 inning. Western's big inning came in the bottom of the 7*, when 11 Catamounts went to the plate to core seven runs. Andy John started out the inning by reaching base on a walk, which scored on Senior Tim Hallams double. Shaft and Strausbaugh chased the Terriers starting pitcher out of the game. McDaniel greeted Wofford's reliever and cleared the bases with one swing of the bat to cut the deficit to one (7-6). Murphy continued the inning with a walk, stealing second base and then scoring on Grey Gregory's single to center. Gregory scored on Jonathan Greene's sacrifice fly to center to give the Catamounts a 9-8 win. Senior Jeremy Ellenberg picked up his second win of the year, allowing the one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Greg Holland closed out the 9" inning for his first save of the season, allowing just one walk with three strikeouts over the final two innings. McDaniel led the way for the Catamounts, going 2-for-3 with five RBIs, including the grand slam in the 7 inning. Grey Gregory also had two hits on the night. Saturday afternoon's game involved snow flurries and another impressive performance by Catamount junior Trey McDaniel. This time, Wofford jumped out the early 2-0 lead in the 1* inning. Rale igh By Zachary Colburn + Wenewsmagazine Astreak was broken and a piece of history was made in the Catamounts 8-6 victory over the Clemson Tigers in front of 3,773 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The win snapped a 35-game losing streak against Clemson at Clemson's field, the 1* time Wester has won at Clemson since 1974. The victory was Western Coach Todd Raleigh's 200 career win; ironically enough, the win came against former mentor and current Clemson coach Jack Leggett. Leggett originally recruited Raleigh at Western in the early 90's. Clemson was able to get the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the 1* inning. The next inning saw the Catamounts send 11 batters to the plate and scoring 6 runs. Blake Murphy started the inning off with a single, moved to 2% base on a passed ball, and then scored on a Jonathan Greene double. Western would get the bases loaded on a Donnie Wilson walk and a single by Grey Gregory. A ball by the Clemson pitcher would score Greene, and a walk by Jason Haynes would load the bases again. Tim Hallam would keep the bases loaded, driving in Wilson with a single. Barrett Shaft then reached on an error, driving in Gregory and keeping the bases loaded. Steven Strausbaugh would drive a single into left infield, plating Haynes and keeping the bases loaded. Trey McDaniel ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right. The Tigers would cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the 4. Western Western answered with three runs in the bottom of the 1* inning. After a walk to lead-off batter, Tim Hallam, and another walk to Barrett Shaft, McDaniel walked to plate and smacked a 1-out, 3-run homer, good for his 7" on the season and a 3-2 lead. Wester took advantage of a Terrier error in the bottom of the 3 and added two more runs, courtesy of a 2-run double by Grey Gregory, scoring McDaniel and Blake Murphy. Western extended the lead to 8-2 in the 4" on a single by McDaniel, scoring Shaft and Steven Strausbuagh, followed by an RBI double by Murphy. Wofford scored two runs in the 5" inning to cut the deficit, In the 6 inning, Western used the long ball again to take an 11-4 lead on Strausbaugh's 11" homer of the season. Wofford picked up three runs over the final three innings, but fell short in the end, with a Western win, 11-7. Tyler Sexton improved to 5-1 on the Season for the Catamounts, going Seven innings, allowing five runs (three eamed) on 11 hits, no walks and striking out six. McDaniel had a big day, going 5-for-5 with a homer and thee RBI's, Despite allowing 10 runs in their game Sunday Afternoon, Western doubled that total with 20 runs of their own. Despite trailing 4-0 early, Western tacked on two on an RBI double by Blake Murphy and scored the 2 one by Ryan Wilson, reaching on an error. Western answered back after trailing by two runs, by cutting into that lead on Steven Strausbaughs 12 homer of the year, making the score 5-3. The Catamounts tied the game in the 5 inning on an RBI ground out by Grey Gregory and on an RBI single to right field by Jonathan Greene. Western would bust the game open and put out of reach in the bottom of the 6", sending 15 men to the plate and scoring 9 runs, to take a 16-9 lead. Western added four Tore runs in the 8 inning, on just two hits. Wester players also reached base on two walks and two hit-by-pitches, for the final 20-10 margin. Brian McCullen picked up his 2 win of season, by allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out two over 2 innings, Greg Holland pitched the next two innings and Bryan Corbett came in the 9 inning to close the game. Greene led the way for Wester going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and scored three times. Wilson and Hallam added three RBIs and two hits apiece. Shaft, Strausbaugh, Murphy and Jason Haynes, all had two hits as well. notches 200" win in victory over Clemson would push across 2 more runs on only 4 hitin the top of the 7 inning. McDaniel had a lead-off double, Murphy was hit by the pitch, and Greene reached on a fielder's choice. McDaniel scored on a double steal, and Greene moved to third on a throwing error. Wilson reached on an error that drove in Greene on the play. Clemson would mount a comeback by scoring 4 runs with 2 outs in the Pottom of the inning. Greg Holland would come into the game and not give up aun and retire all 7 batters he faced over the final 2.1 innings to earn the save and preserve the win for the Catamounts. Wester starter Tyler Johnson pitched the first 4 innings, but would get the no decision, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts, Brian McCullen got the win, going to 4-1 on the season, allowing 2 hits and 3 uns over 2.2 innings with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. The Catamounts were lead offensively by Hallam, who went 3-for-4, Strausbaugh and Greene each added 2hits. Clemson starter Matt Vaughn suffered the loss to go to 0-1 on the season. Vaughn allowed 5 hits, 6 runs in one-plus innings work with 3 walks and a strikeout. Marquez Smith led the Tigers offensively going 3-for-4, while Herman Demmink and Travis Storrer each had 2 hits apiece with one of Storrer's being a home-run in the 4 inning,
