  • 18 | WCnewsmagazine Why Republicans SHOULD approve By Jessica Jarrard + wenewsmagazine Two of the hottest political topics in the nation deal with birth control and the use of contraceptives. While one is termination of birth and the other is prevention of birth, they have recently been lumped together by Republicans as legislation is being proposed across the country to limit the use of birth control Republicans should approve of birth control because it isn't the termination of life, and it decreases the number of unwanted births and the amount of money needed for welfare. The recent switch to conservative national politics was sparked with the second election of G.W. Bush and Republicans gaining majority numbers in both the House and the Senate. G.W. Bush has appointed two justices to the Supreme Court in the past year as well. This drastic move toward conservative politics raises much debate over legislation concerning the rights women have over their bodies. Conservatives generally focus on conservative economics, but this administration has moved to conservative social issues, It could be argued that in close elections, the candidate's stance on birth control is what pushes the voter to one side or the other. This gets tricky for Republicans because there are conservatives who choose to be conservative because of theirstance on economics, not ust morality. Economic conservatives tend to disagree with a welfare state; thus they should encourage those who don't want children and engage in sexo take birth control so that their children won't ultimately become the economic responsibility of the state. However, the "Religious Right does not always agree with economic conservatism when it stands in the way of their moral code. Religious conservatives feel that birth control is immoral because it goes against the laws of nature and against God's creation. They believe that it is God's will whether or not a woman gets pregnant by having sex. They also believe that those who aren't married shouldn't be having sex anyway. Despite their view of morality conceming sex outside of marriage, millions of Americans have sex without family planning in mind. While those in favor of ending the sale of birth control believe it isn't right, they should acknowledge STDs in college By Rachel Mitchell Wenewsmagazine STDs have grown to be one of the most common diseases in America with a staggering one in five adults infected with some type of STD. The more amazing fact is that 63 percent of these people are under the age of 25. What makes STDs so dangerous is that they are usually silent killers and clam millions of lives each day. There are more than 50 types of STDs with four major types that plaque a college campus. They are chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital warts and genital herpes. Though a wellness center cannot disclose the statistic due to the Patient Privacy Act, these four STDs are the most common on any college campus no matter where it is located. Of the four, chlamydia is the most common among college students and in the US. This type of STD is curable along with gonorrhea, but neither genital warts nor genital herpes has a cure. For anyone who has an STD, the risk of getting infected with HIV/ AIDS greatly increases if he/she chooses to have sex because the person of birth control COMMENTARY that it happens. Ultimately the state will be financially responsible for those put up for adoption (especially if the Religious Right succeeds in banning abortion). Itseems that conservative ideology has changed drastically in recent years. Some conservatives believe that each individual is ultimately responsible for themselves and themselves alone. What better way to take responsibility for your own actions than to use contraceptives? This view tends to be more libertarian than conservative. Either way, those who would vote Republican based on their economic view might think twice now since Republicans are going after birth control. Recently, the Missouri House of Representatives voted to ban state funding of birth control. While itreceived enough support to pass, many argued the economic problems it will cause by way of welfare. Those in favor of the ban argue that the state should not fund birth control as part of its medical expense coverage. Ultimately, the money invested in birth control could save them money. States are responding to this issue in different ways. For example, supporters of a bill that would allow women the right to emergency contraceptives sent over 6,000 post cards to Governor Bill Owens, according to the Rocky Mountain News. The use of contraceptives is widely debated across the nation. While Republicans would like to think that sexual promiscuity is immoral by their standards, that many not be how others feel or act. Republicans must realize that even though they believe that sexs par of lfe for reproduction only, many People are having sex for other reasons. Since Republicans dislike welfare, they must recognize how banning birth control can ultimately increase the need for welfare. Republicans must allow women to be responsible for their own lives and take measures to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Based on their economic view, they should encourage the use of birth control is already infected with one disease, making the immune system weaker. HIV is spread more easily from female to male than male to female. This makes women more susceptible to HIV than men. As of now, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. The only defense that people have is education and prevention. With raised awareness and education of STDs, why is there an increase of STDs instead of a decrease? Though the number of people with STDs is large, it does not necessarily mean that there are more people * with STDs but that more people are reporting it. However, in America alone, 15.3 million new cases of STDs are reported each year making the US the highest industrial nation with STDs in the world. The increase of reported cases shows that STDs are becoming more common and could be even larger because some people choose not to report it to health officials. There are many lifelong health problems that are caused by STDs that most people do not know about. STDs can damage joints, the heart, |
