  • December 1, 1994 Western Carolinian Features Nafasha Tyson Staff Reporter Did anybody catch the HBO special entitled "Cosmic Slop" about three weeks ago? If you have HBO, then you probably saw the commercial for it. Imagine your television screen filled with a huge bust shot of the master of Funkadelic himself, George Clinton. Clinton served as the narrator of sorts, presented with zany hairstyles and a third eye on his forehead as he commented on the three mini-films produced and directed by brothers Warren and Reginald Hudlin. Each skit portrayed plots and themes similar to "Tales From the Crypt" but with a deeper, more ethnic flavor. The most controversial and thought-provoking skit introduced a new type of trade agreement that even Bill Clinton couln't have handled. Aliens came to Earth with their leader in a guise mocking Ronald Reagan, asking government officials for a little deal. With a promise of the United States being a better world power than any other nation, the aliens asked for the African- American race in return. Whoa, talk about The Big Boat Ride squared!-!! Viewers watched as our precious officials actually considered making the barter. The Hudlin brothers examined the persistence of the media. Call-ins and votes were staged. Talk shows put pictures of Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, and Magic Johnson up, recognizing just what type of people could be leaving. For comic relief, I guess, they had a Michael Jackson look-alike on stage with other African-Americans and Franklin Cover and Roxie Roker (Tom and Helen Willis) from "The Jeffersons" in a cameo. Doctors used the media as well. A light-skinned physician got on television using the "paper bag concept" for his commentary to save his own ass stating that "anyone the same color or lighter than the bag can stay comfortably on Earth". Now that put a hamper on all minorities who couldn't pass the "paper bag test." Something tells me that Mike knew that this thing was coming and had been preparing for it since 1987. Sell-outs were punished. Robert Guillame ("Benson," Phantom of the Opera, etc.) held a Congress position. He was a brotha who led the good life, a fledgling under Chez Whitey's wing, with a pale African-American wife and two brown-skinned children. For more flavor, the son was portrayed with a "Carlton Banks" mentality and having a Caucasian girlfriend. Now, Guillame knew that the government wanted to OK the deal, so he tried to help his people out. They didn't trust him because he was stereotypically named an "Uncle Tom," a "Republican"—two common area's of mistrust in black people. When he was denied assistance from them, he went elsewhere. Liquor store owners, athletic company CEO's — were all notified in order to keep black people on the planet. These men proclaimed that if black citizens left, their sales would take a nosedive. Trip, hunh? Deception sneaks in once Guillame's Congress buddies find out that he's been going against their plans of getting rid of the race, and having a "better America," so their promised shelter of taking him and his family to London turned into a quick, do not collect $200, type of.trip to the alien slave ship. Did I mention the fact that his pale skinned wife and his son's Caucasian girlfriend were spared? Cool story. It examined many issues present today and festering in the portrayal of minorities: media, ell-outs, deception and mistrust of the white man, inner wars of dark-skinned blacks vs. light-skinned blacks, Uncle Tom's, interracial relationships... I'm not saying that I agree with every neo-archetypal symbol in the flick. I'm all for interracial relationships. I'm against the "Red Rover" game between races, but that doesn't make the problem go away.lt exists, but Hudlin's film makes you go, hmmm... is this possible? Black people, can't live with lem, can't live without lem, besides who else would Susan Smith have blamed for her screw-up? wr^ m©SS®JM3 IK- Club Dr. Student Apartments •One and Two Bedroom Apts.
