  • Local Elections important to students By Rachel Mitchell * Wenewsmagazine What difference could a group of college students make in a local election? Most could care less about the local elections, but they should be just as important as the national, as local elections affect residents more directly. Last year was the Presidential election, which focused more on the nation. In contrast, local elections choose the candidate that will govern over everything from how much money will be spent on roads to what the drinking age should be. Those who are elected into office by the local elections establish these laws for the state. When settlers came from Britain and other areas, they naturally formed small localized governments. They no longer wanted to be ruled by a king. Local governments were established to provide an equal voice in the government. After the Revolutionary War, the local governments were joined together as one nation, yet they still created their own laws for their own communities. Federal laws didnt mean much to them. Problems developed when different local governments from other areas conflicted with each other. For example, if you were married in the state of Maryland, but moved to North Carolina, according to North Carolina law, you are no longer married. This along with other discrepancies made things very difficult. The Supremacy Clause was created to fix that. It states that within the US Constitution federal law overrides state law. The US Constitution is very By Rachel Mitchell * Wenewsmagazine November is rolling in fast. For students it means finals are coming, Thanksgiving vacation and local elections. This is a busy time for candidates and their staff, but how are students getting involved with the local elections? Since most elections only come every two or four years, students generally only focus on presidential elections. However, the local election is just as important as the presidential and directly affects the people. There are many political organizations on campus if students wish to get directly involved with the local politics. The Student Association of Government and Legal Affairs (SAGLA) has monthly meetings to discuss political topics facing the community and the university. Their motto is: breaking down the walls of ignorance and apathy at WCU. They cover a variety of topics in their debates that take place each semester between the College Democrats and College Republicans. At the debates, students can learn first hand what the issues are, and where each party stands. They also have social functions, and take trips to Raleigh, NC, and Washington, DC, to study the political structure of the state and nation. Another group like SAGLA is the Local Government Training Program (LGTP). Not only do they focus on local issues, but they also focus on the westernmost part of the state. The LGTP offers workshops to better understand specific issues, seminars, consultations and video teleconferences with state officials. When speaking with the local officials, students can learn about the development of the local and state government and understand its importance. They can also WCnewsmagazine small compared to state constitutions. This is because states can make any law they wish, as long as it is not against the US Constitution. This is the reason why the Gay Marriage Amendment was such a big deal in the election year. With an amendment banning gay marriage, states like Vermont would not be allowed to perform civil unions based on the Supremacy Clause. Local officials make extremely important decisions that affect job availability, how much money a school system receives or which community * organizations receive money. Local politics affect the daily lives of citizens. Congressmen and Senators are voted on locally. These are the peopl who vote on national issues that can potentially affect us locally. If a vote believes something needs to be focused on in Washington, they can vote for the candidate that best represents their view. They are there to represent the voters and could be the dividing factor on what happens in the nation, that later affects the state. It is also important to remember that these local officials are the ones who plan out how to evacuate during disasters, such as floods, mudslides or hurricanes. Once the disaster is over, they also determine how money should be spent to repair the damage and which areas need money the most. Local government is more responsible for your well-being than you think. Stay informed on local elections, and vote! Students get involved in campus politics get directly involved with formulating policies for western NC. Amore direct way to support a particular party is the College Democrats or College Republicans. The College Democrats offer members the chance to work for Democratic candidates and sponsor seminars. They also hold speakers along with an election-year voter Awareness Drive and an absentee ballot drive. The College Republicans promote the Republican Party among WCU students. Most recently, College Republicans work in community service to promote civic engagement. In past years, they have sponsored speakers, volunteered for campaigns of local, state, and national candidates and held voter registration drives. If a student has little experience in dealing with political systems then they can join the Student Government Association (SGA). SGA also has the voter registration drive for any student who has not or does not know how to register. One of the activities involved in SGAis Service NC, which gets students involved with the local community. This area of government mainly focuses on life at WCU. Students can also work for candidates by handing out pamphlets and bumper stickers. To become an active participant, students can go to a town hall meeting and learn about problems in the community and voice solutions. While there are many student organizations that deal with politics it is also beneficial to tell friends about local meetings. Being able to vote is one of the rights given to Americans and can make a difference. 11 pte |
