  • WCnewsmagazine WCU breaks losing streak by stompin #35 UT-Chattanooga 38-20 By Andy Gambill WCnewsmagazine After losing three games in a row, the Catamounts were not favored in their match up with the Chattanooga Mocs. But the underdog won, as WCU took it to UT-Chattanooga and helped reenergize the Catamount fan hopes of a Homecoming victory against Elon. With a 38-20 victory over the 35" ranked Chattanooga Mocs, the Cats reestablished themselves as a team that can do some damage in the Southern Conference. The game began with the 5-2 Mocs kicking off to the 2-3 Catamounts. A fair catch by Chaz Jackson put the ball on the Catamount 34-yard line. Western started off the drive with three straight rushing plays for 20 yards. J.C. Brown started off with a three-yard carry. Fullback John Bush followed that play with a six-yard tote, and Lamont Reid capped off the third play with an 11-yard run. After an incomplete pass by Justin Clark, the Cats went back to the ground with a 4-yard carry by Reid. Facing 3"-and-6 from the Chattanooga 42-yard line, Clark connected with Asheville-native Michael Hines for an 8-yard gain and the first down. A Darius Fudge carry on the first down brought seven yards, but an illegal shift on second down pushed the ball back to 2"-and-8. After a short one-yard pass from Clark to Fudge, the Cats received an illegal formation penalty to make it 3"-and-12. Clark connected with wide receiver J.C. Brown for 9 yards but it was not enough for the first. WCUs play calling was aggressive, and they went for it on 4"-and-3. Clark found John Bush for 15 yards and the first down to push the ball to the Chattanooga 12-yard line. The drive stalled from there with two carries for a loss of seven yards and an incomplete pass. Highly regarded freshman recruit Jonathan Parsons kicked in a 38-yard field goal to put Western up 3-0. After a Chattanooga punt, Western had the ball on their 20 yard-line. After a one-yard carry by Fudge, the Cats went to the air with an 11-yard completion from Clark to J.C. Brown. The Cats ran the ball four straight times for 44 yards, including a 27-yard run by Lamont Reid. Darius Fudge fumbled on the fifth straight run of the drive, giving Chattanooga the ball on their 21-yard line. After three plays, Chattanooga was forced to punt on the next drive, but WCUs Francis Brown muffed the punt, and Terry Lindley recovered the fumble for the Mocs and ran the ball all the way down to the Catamount 2-yard line. After being stopped for a one-yard gain on first down, Levonte Barber busted through for the touchdown on the second down to make the score 7-3 Mocs. The Cats were forced to punt on the next drive and after a 63-yard punt for a touchback by Tim Mayse, the Mocs started on their 20-yard line. Sophomore cornerback Carlton Bailey intercepted a Chattanooga pass on the third down and ran the ball back 28 yards for a touchdown that put WCU ahead 10-7. Bailey garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors with his performance as he finished the game with a team-leading 10 tackles and 1 interception for a touchdown. Western scored again with less than two minutes to go in the half as they began a drive on their 11-yard line with 1:28 left. After a 2-yard carry by fullback John Bush, the Cats handed the ball off to slick tailback Darius fudge for a 24-yard gain. Justin Clark connected with Lamont Reid for a 63-yard screen pass and touchdown on the next play to push the score to 17-7. Primus Glover intercepted a Chattanooga pass on the next drive to end the half at 17-7 in Western's favor. Chattanooga started off the second half by playing even worse than they did in the first half. After the Mocs couldn't garner a first down on the first three plays, Chattanooga trotted the punt team out for fourth down. Nicholas Wishart blocked the punt, though, and freshman wide-out Marcus Nelums recovered the ball in the end-zone for a touchdown, putting Western ahead 24- 7. On the next drive, Western struck gold again as wide receiver Michael Hines blocked a Chattanooga punt and ran the ball back 9 yards for a touchdown. So three and a half minutes into the second half, Western had blocked two punts and recovered the bail both times for touchdowns to push their jead to 31-7. Chattanooga finally found composure and struck back on the next drive. With Matt Lopez coming in at quarterback for the Mocs, Chattanooga went to the air on three of the five plays on the drive to find pay-dirt. Lopez went 3 for 3 for 43 yards and found Brian Arnold for a 15-yard completion and touchdown on the third pass. With the score 31-14, the Cats came out looking to answer the Chattanooga score, and they did just that. A roughing the passer penalty on the first down pushed the ball ahead 15 yards to the Catamount 42-yard line. After a one-yard carry by Lamont Reid, the Cats went back to the air, completing passes to John Bush for 4 yards and Clemson-transfer Chris Jefferson for 8 yards and a first down. The Cats busted loose with the running game on the next two plays as Lamont Reid ran up the middle for 19 yards before Darius Fudge slipped loose for a 14-yard gain on the next play. With 1*-and-10 on the Chattanooga 12-yard line, the Cats handed the ball to Reid again, this time for a 4-yard gain. After an incomplete pass, Justin Clark connected with John Bush for a 5-yard gain on 3-and-6. Facing 4"-and-one, the Cats went for it and Lamont Reid ran through the middle, untouched for a 3-yard touchdown to put the Cats up 38-14. After exchanging punts, the Mocs scored again to pull within 38-20. Chattanooga found success on the ground this time, as they ran the ball four straight times for 23 yards to open the drive. Matt Lopez connected with Tyrus Ward for a 4-yard gain on the next play, but Ward dropped a pass on 1*-and-10 at the Western 27. Lopez found Michael Gilmore for a 27-yard touchdown on the next play, but the extra point was missed. The touchdown pass represented the last score of the game for either team as Western won by the final of 38- 20. The Catamounts were dominant in the victory and had some good offensive performances by Lamont Reid, Darius Fudge and Justin Clark. Reid ran hard and piled up 115 yards rushing and a touchdown on only 18 carries. Reid also had one catch for 63 yards and a touchdown. Fudge was elusive as always with 18 carries for 100 yards. Clark had one of his best games of the season as he completed 13 of 18 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Clark did not turn the bail over at all. The defense was dominant, as usual, with strong performances from Carlton Bailey, Mitchell Dukes, Primus Glover and James Conklin. Baileys performance of 10 tackles and 1 interception for a touchdown garnered him Defensive Player of the Week honors in the SoCon. Junior safety Mitchell 27 pea Dukes finished the game with 7 tackles and 3 sacks. Glover picked off a pass, : and Conklin finished the game with 5 tackles, one for a loss. The offensive performance was encouraging and gives hope for a strong performance in the Homecoming game against Elon. The defense was strong as well and should continue it's dominance against a struggling Elon offense. The win against Chattanooga proved just how dominant the Cats can be when they play up to their potential. Heres to more performances like the one against the Mocs!
