  • The Western Carolinian Page 4 Thursday, March 18, 1993 Sports Volume 58 Number 22 Well, a lot has certainly happened since the last paper came out, in general as well as in sports. First of all, welcome to Benny Dees, our new men's basketball coach. Also, congratulations to Larry Travis for getting us such a strong replacedment for Greg Blatt. We'll have a complete story in next week's paper. The break started with a trip down to Charleston for the baseball team's series with the Citadel. The first thing I noticed was the age of the baseball stadium. Remember seeing baseball stadiums from the 30's and40's in movies? Well that's what this one reminded me of. The pressbox itself wasn't much. You could barely see out of the windows, although in all fairness to Citadel, the windows did open up. There was one problem with that, though, the wind came in when you did and practically froze you as you watched the game. It made me really appreciate what we have here at WCU. In the first game of the series, Phillip Grundy showed off why he is so highly touted by the pro scouts. He held the Citadel in check throughout, and the Cat offense exploded early and often in the big win. While this game was impressive and fun to watch, it did not (and could not) compare to the game that followed. I must admit that even I was getting pretty down after the team got down 7-1, and were just not playing very well. That all changed in the sixth. Things didn't start off very well as Citadel got two quick outs. But then Grundy Igot things going with a single. (Marc Strieker and Rob Doherty both singled to load up the bases, and two walks scored two runs. Then up came John Connolly. Connolly, a junior college transfer from Florida, was having a bad day going into the sixth. He had struck out twice at the plate and had made an error that allowed a run to score. With the count 2-2, he planted the ball well over the fence for a grand slam homer. Two innings later, Scott Lyman singled in Rodney Hennon and the Cats had a double- header sweep. The Cats had to savor the win for a while as it was a week before they would again taste victory. WCU recovered in time for a three-game sweep of Davidson to go 5-1 in conference. The Cats are now 8-10 overall after two close losses to Georgia in Athens. Phillip Grundy had an appendix removed last week and will be out for at least another week. The series against ETSU was cancelled and both Wed. and (probably) Thurs. games were cancelled due to snow on the field. Basketball was not nearly as much fun to watch. The men's basketball tournament started (and ended for WCU) on March 4 in Asheville. Things looked good early as the Cats rolled to an early 15-point lead over App. But it didn't last as the Mountaineers showed why the Cats haven't beaten them in 14 straight games by rolling to the victory. The women's tournament was downright depressing. UT-Chattanooga sent the Lady Cats home on a very sour note as they dominated from start to finish in rolling to the win. Good luck in the future to the seniors on both the men's and women's teams. Thanks to Robert Gaines and Lori Lyons for the record-setting moments, and also to Maurice Williams, Amy McEntire, Marlena Surratt, Laura Thurman, and Amy Reece as well. 77i«? opinions expressed in this column are not necessarily the opinions of the Western Caro- linianor it's staff. Western loses Grundy for at least two weeks Derek Smolik Sports Editor Western Carolina University's baseball continued to play strong over the break despite an injury to Phillip Grundy, a winless trip to Florida, and the heavy snowfall. Grundy, the Southern Conference pre-season playerof the year, had an emergency appendectomy last Thursday night at C. J. Harris Community Hospital in Sylva. The junior pitcher/ designated hitter is 2- 2 this season with a 2.72 earned run average and 36 strikeouts in 33 innings. Grundy also leads the team with 20 RBI's and is second on the team with a .383 batting average. He could be available for the series against Georgia Southern in Statesboro on March 27-28. Head Coach Keith LeClair said that they are taking the situation "Day-today". The Cats started off spring break with a trip south to Charleston for their conference opener against theCitadel. Grundy took the mound in the first game, getting his first win of the seasonand second complete game. Western's offense exploded, scoring six first inning runs and 12 for the game in the 12-2 shellacking. Jason Beverlin took the mound in the second game, but struggled and left with the Bulldogs ahead 7-1. WCU was unable to close the gap until the sixth inning. Grundy lined a single with two outs to get the inning going. Two singles and two walks produced two runs and loaded the bases for John Connolly. The junior promdy launched his first home run of the year to tie the game at 7-7. Three innings later the Cats scored a run to win the game 8-7. Freshman Joe Jack Seller picked up his first win of the season and Mike Manning picked up the save. Western was unable to come up with a come back the next day and lost the game to the Bulldogs 7-5. The Cats travelled south to Florida for a pair of two-game series against Jacksonville and Stetson. Unfortunately for the Cats, some of the players got sick and struggled or didn't play. WCU, tired both physically and mentally according to LeClair, was blown out in two straight games by Jacksonville. The Dolphins won the first game 9-0 and the second 18- 1. Grundy and Sellers helped to hold down the Hatters offense, but the WCU bats were nearly silent as Western dropped two games. Davidson came to town and gave the Cats the lift they needed as they swept the Wildcats and evened their record at 8-8. Western played Georgia close in two games, but lost both by scores of 5-4 and 11-9. Furman comes to town this weekend to take on the Cats in an important Southern Conference match-up. Furman was picked to finish close behind WCU in the preseason poll. 3/20 Furman (2) 12:00 3/21 Furman 1:00 3/22 at Georgia Tech 4:00 3/23 at Georgia Tech 4:00 3/25 UNC-Asheville 3:00 3/27 at GSU (2) 12:00 3/28 at GSU 1:00 3/31 at Winthrop 3:00 4/1 UNC-Ashville 3:00 4/3 Marshall (2) 12:00 4/4 Marshall 1:00 4/6 at Tennessee 7:00 4/8 Presbyterian 3:00 4/9 at Virginia Tech 12:30 4/10 at VMI (2) 12:00 4/11 at VMI 1:00 4/13 Clemson 3:00 4/16 at UNC-Greensboro 7:00 4/17 at UNC-Greensboro 7:00 4/18 at UNC-Greensboro 1:00 4/20 USC-Aiken 3:00 4/21 USC-Aiken 3:00 4/24 at ASU (2) 12:00 4/25 at ASU 1:00 4/27 Lincoln Memorial 3:00 4/29-Southern Conference TBA 5/2 Tournament 5/10 at Grand Canyon 2:00 5/11 at Utah 6:00 5/12 at BYU 2:00 Carolinian file photo Phillip Grundy connects on an offering earlier this year. Tennis team has "strong" spring break, despite snow Stephanie Burton Staff Intern While most Western students were basking in the sun or skiing the mountains of the Colorado Rockies, the men's and women's tennis teams were slamming balls on the tennis courts. The Lady Catamounts started their Spring Break in Charleston, SC against Charleston Southern. Last year the Catamounts were beaten by Charleston Southern 8-1, but this year the Cats came back with a vengeance, defeating Charleston Southern 4- 3. "I. was a good win," said coach Weinman. "To defeat the exact same team that beat us last year was a great feeling." Freshman Kerri Jackson won a close match for the team in the third set to bring the final score to 4-3. "It was so exciting," said Jackson. "It was my first big win as a college player." Next, the Lady Cats traveled to Georgia to play their first conference match against Georgia Southern. The Cats lost five extremely close matches, three of which went into the third set. The Cats were defeated by the Eagles 8-1. The win came when Kathy Crowley won her grueling 3 1/2 hour match 7-6, in a tie breaker of the third set. Then, last Wednesday, the Lady Cats crushed UNC- Asheville by a score of 7-0. "The girls were playing very strong," said Weinman. "Senior Laura Waitsman played a good match." The heart of the women' s season will be from now until April 3rd. They have some tough matches coming up against Chat tanooga, Marshall, Appalachian, and Furman. For the men, it was a story of the same caliber. They led off their break in Charleston as well, defeating Charleston Southern 7-0. "The men played really strong against their opponents," said coach Weinman. Next, the men took on Mars Hill, and left with another win under their belt. They defeated Mars Hill 7-2 with big wins from their junior and senior players. The men later suffered a disappointing loss of 4-3 to The College of Charleston. "They are a tough team," said coach Weinman "They aren't the best team in the nation for losing." The Cats also lost a conference match against Georgia South- em 7-0. Even with the recent defeats, the men's tennis team holds a strong season record of 7-3. "We lost some close matches," said Weinman, "and won the ones we should have, but we still have some big matches ahead in the season." With important matches coming up for both the men and the women, the teams hope to remain playing strong and to scratch another mark in the win column.
