  • Sports Streak Continues Page 11 by Doug Irwin Western Carolina lust its fifth consecutivesame of the 19X1 football season to the Middle Tennesfee Blue Raiders on Saturday night in Cullowhee, 23-10. The Catamounts got off on the wrong "foof'early in the game against the tough Raiders of Middle Tennessee. Poor punting by WCU early, and throughout the game, left MTSU within striking distance of theend /one. Alter Westerns lust possession stalled, Eddie McGill shanked his first punt as it traveled a mere 21 yards. This set up Middle Tennessee's first touchdown as quarterback Brown Sanford threw 30 yards to Hamby in the end zone. Hamby was so wide open; it looked like Western blew a coverage assignment. Western played sloppy ball throughout the remainder of the first quarter as Ronnie Mixon fumbled once and McGill shanked two more punts that travelled 21 and 29 yards each. Middle Tennessee added another touchdown in the second quarter after quarterback Ronnie Mixon committed his second turnover on an interception in WCU territory. Safety James Griffin grabbed the errant Mixon pass and carried it to the Western three yard line. Two plays later, fullback Sammy Bryant scored, giving MTSU a 14-0 advantage. The only kind of excitement the Catamounts produced in the first half was on a WCU punt. Dean Biasucci, replacing the beleagured McGill, could not even get the ball to his foot as he dropped the snap and was thus swamped by Middle Tennessee players. This gave MTSU good field position yet again, but the Raiders could not capitalize as the first half gratefully came to an end. In the third quarter. Middle Tennessee added three points to their lead when freshman Kelly Potter kicked a 27 yard field goal. The Cats finally crossed the fifty yard line, offensively, for the first time in the game, but could not muster a score. MTSU added two more field goals in the fourth quarter on the strong leg of Kelly Potter. Jeff Gilbert replaced Mixon on the next possession with good results as Gilbert connected with Dwayne Norman on a 53 yard pass play. This set up a Dean Biasucci field goal from 42 yards making the score 23-3, MTSU. For all practical purposes the game was over, but someone forgot to tell Ricky Pate. The freshman linebacker for Western Carolina picked off a Middle Tennessee pass late in the game and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown. Playing down the harsh defeat Middle Tennessee put on the Cats, Bob Waters said "The players evidently underestimated them (MTSU) after having an easy time over there last year. This year it was their turn to easily beat us." Waters added, "We played an awful football game from a technical standpoint and played with very little intensity and emotion." Let's Try W of ford The Western Carolina Catamounts, already experiencing their worst start since 1953, will attempt to regroup once again in preparation for this Saturday's game against the Wofford Terriers in Spartanburg. S.C. After last week's embarrassing showing against Middle Tennessee, Coach Bob Waters has had "boot camp" down in Whitmire Stadium this week. Waters had the team out Sunday trying to make sure something like last week's game does not happen again. One thing Waters can not do much about is the injuries the Cats have sustained. Dwayne Norman will be out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder separation and center Robbie Jackson is also out for the season with a JACKSON COUNTY AIRPORT • Airplane rides • Aerial Tours • Aerial Photography • 7-Days a Week • • call 586-2960 • knee injury. Defensive end Don Chason and safety Richard Dukes will sit out for the second straight game. After losing its first two games, including a 45-10 loss to Clemson. the Wofford Terriers have won their last three in a row over Lenior-Rhyne, Carson-Newman, and Presbyterian. "Wofford has a physical, well-disciplined football team that likes to run the football," says Waters. The Terriers basically have a ball control offense, one that averages 230 yards a game. They run off a "wingbone" offense which is a variation of wishbone, and their tough defense is an opportunistic one. Wofford's offense is directed by quarterback Charlie Bradshaw. a 50'; passer who has also rushed for over 200 yards this season. They also have three running backs with over 200 yards rushing, including tailback Anthony Gaines who photo by Rick McDaniel has accumulated 348 yards. The tough Wofford defense is led by cornerback Curtis Patterson, linebacker Ronnie Ray and Tim Renfrow. who has four interceptions this year. There may be some new faces in the starting lineup when the Cats take on Wofford. Coach Waters says, "We are going to find 22 players who hate to lose and want to win this week. It could be the same 22 we started last week or 22 new players." Wofford leads this series, which dates back to 1952,9-5. even though Western Carolina has won the past three meetings. The game will be played at Wofford's Snyder Field in Spartanburg and kickoff is scheduled for 7:00. The Catamount Sports Network will broadcast the game.
