  • 28 WCnewsmagazine By Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine As football returned to Cullowhee over the weekend, hopes were riding high for a win over The Citadel. After The Citadel was crushed by Appalachian State 45-13, the Catamount faithful were expecting a similar blowout since the Cats were ranked higher nationally than the Mountaineers. What the Catamount fans received, though, was a shocking and depressing loss to the less-talented Bulldogs. The Catamount's first drive started to touch on what the fans expected, as Justin Clark connected with Michael Hines on the first play of the game for a 34-yard gain, but three plays later Clark threw an interception. The defense held tough and stopped the Bulldogs. The scoreboard finally lit up late in the second quarter as The Citadel became the first team to put up points. After a 35-yard punt by Stephen Brown for a touchback, the Bulldogs began the drive with 4:09 left to play in the first half. On the first play of the drive, Montrell Lee broke loose for a 49-yard gain to place the ball on the Western 31. After a Citadel timeout, the Bulldogs came ANANEAN #18 Western suffers disappointing loss to The Citadel, 17-7 out with some trickery and threw the ball 31 yards for the touchdown, as wide receiver Kinta Palmer connected with TaMar Jernigan. After exchanging punts, the Cats took over own their own 36-yard line with 40 seconds to go. A pass to tailback Darius Fudge brought 7 yards, but on the very next play, quarterback Justin Clark was sacked for a 13-yard loss and fumbled the ball. The Bulldogs recovered the fumble on the Western 23-yard line. On the next play, The Citadel found pay-dirt again as Kinta Palmer caught a 23-yard pass from quarterback Duran Lawson. The Bulldogs silenced and shocked the crowd as they went into half-time with a 14-0 lead. The second half started much like the first half and was played out with plenty of punting. Each drive for both teams ended in a punt until 7:08 in the third quarter. The Catamounts took the field this time, but after three plays and no first down they were forced to punt. This time, however, a roughing- the-kicker call gave the Catamounts a first down on The Citadel 38-yard line. With freshman quarterback Michael McQueeney in the game, the Cats were looking to jump-start the offense and finally close in on the 14- 0 gap. A false-start penalty pushed the ball back 5 yards, and after an incompletion, the Cats went back to the run as Lamont Reid rushed for a 12-yard gain. Reid rushed for two yards } on the next play and then busted through for one yard and the first down on 4"-and- one at The Citadel 29. The run game stalled out and only gained three yards on the next two plays to set up 3%-and-7. The pressure was. then @ on freshman Michael 4 McQueeney to make a play, but instead of making the play, he looked like a lost freshman as he was sacked for a 5-yard loss. The coaching Staff decided to go for it on 4-and-12, and McQueeney __ once again got happy feet as he tucked the ball and was nailed for a 12-yard loss. While McQueeney, no doubt, had good physical skills and Justin Clark had
