  • 2 Q WCrewsmagazine Badminton By Ryan Fussell WCnewsmagazine The intramural badminton campus championships took place the first week of October. Several tournament styles were held for participants, and overall turn-out was excellent, especially with the womens singles tournament, with a solid 60 or so competitors. Games were played to 15 points, and because of such large turnouts on both sides, they played one game matches in a single elimination tournament. The men took to the Reid Gym main court on Tuesday and Wednesday to qualify for the finals on Thursday. On Thursday, graduate student Eric Cantrell . and senior Brandon Blackburn represented the PE Majors and made quick work of the effort by Kappa Sigma representatives Derek Conte and Daniel Lopp. While both teams had strong rallies and many powerful strokes, change in tempo and shuttlecock placement made the difference, elevating Cantrell and Blackburn to this years championship doubles title. Just as with the mens doubles game, the difference in each game came down to directing the shuttlecock to hit corners, but each champion had the same basic game plan. Miranda Long took the independent singles title. Sailing through early rounds, Long was dominant until the championship round. While the competition was a bit stiffer in the final match, Long still stayed in front for the championship by simply placing the birdie where her opponent wasnt, and pulled off the win, 15- 11.
