Friday, September 25, 1964 The Western Carolinian Page 7 Preparations Announced For Men's Fall Intramural Program Officials of Men's intramural sports have begun making plans and preparations for the opening of activities for the fall quarter. Already, a unit manager for each floor in each dormitory has been chosen to aid in the direction of the program. These managers will assist in the offered areas of tag football, table tennis (singles), badminton (singles) and a "Swim and Stay Fit" Program. These sports will begin in approximately three weeks and continue through the entire fall quarter. This wide program offers a perfect opportunity for th.e non-varsity athlete to obtain adequate exercise and release stored up energy in a creative manner. Tag football games will be held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons Corvair Features Surprises For '65 Confirming rumors that have abounded since January this year, Chevrolet's popular Corvair will have a surprise package for 1965. Featuring new styling and important engineering changes, the Corvair line will also include a new, high- performance model—the Corsa. Test drivers found a convertible Corsa capable of a top speed of just under 120 mph and 0-60 mph acceleration time of 9.7 seconds. In addition to the Corsa, which is offered in either convertible or hardtop coupe form, Corvair has eliminated the door pillars in all its closed models. A redesign of the car's unitized body chassis has enabled elimination of the door pillars and has resulted in a stronger, quieter vehicle. from 3:00-5:00 PM. Any team is still in contention for the championship until it has lost two games. Approximately fifteen teams will engage in this competition. Students wishing to play tag football should consult the unit manager on the floor of his dormitory. Table tennis and badminton will also function on a double elimination basis. Students interested in participating in these activities should sign up in Reid Gymnasium, Room 18. At the end of the school year, individual awards will be given to the winning participant in each activity. Fullback and co-captain Red Seay (above) scored the only touchdown for Western Carolina last Saturday in the 13-7 loss to Carson-Newman at Jefferson City, Tenn. The Cats play Appalachian tomorrow night in Memorial Stadium at 8:00 In the home opener. GAS FOR LESS Cullowhee Hi-Way Service Tires - Tubes - Wash Grease - Batteries - Oil Radford Hooper, Owner-Mgr. WELCOME, STUDENTS -TO- The College Shop ALL YOUR COLLEGE NEEDS SANDWICHES - SCHOOL SUPPLIES — Next To Joyner — Three Conference Games Scheduled, Apps To Meet Cats Here Tomorrow Three conference gamae are on tap in the Carolinas Conference tomorrow, with the league- leading Appalachian traveling to Western Carolina in the headliner. Elon is at Guilford and Newberry at Catawba in the other family contests while Lenoir Rhyne is host to Presbyterian in a non-conference game. The outlook: Presbyterian at Lenoir Rhyne Coach Hanley Painter's Bears will be trying to bounce back after a 17-0 defeat last Saturday at the hands of Wofford. Presbyterian, on the other hand, will be going for its second straight victory. As the South Carolina school is not yet eligible for the conference championship, the game will not count In the conference standings. Both teams will be going all out, however, with the edge going to Lenoir Rhyne in a close one, 21 17. Newberry At Catawba Catawba ran Mars Hill off the field last week as quarterback John Scott scored once and threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to halfback David Campbell en route to a 42-12 victory. The Indians' hard-rushing defense resulted in three fumbles and a blocked punt. Newberry wound up in the league cellar after its 20-6 loss to Appalachian, and chances are that the situation will not change this week. The outlook is a victory for Catawba, probably 24-10. Elon At Guilford: This game should be no real contest as the conference favorite, Elon defends its co-title against Guilford, who owns a 12-game winning streak. In the Chrstians' 14-6 win over Emory and Henry, quarterback Ed Wheless hit 9 of 16 passes for 131 yards, and should take to the air aginst the Quakers tomorrow afternoon. If Elon is to live up to its role of favorite, it must handily roll over Guilford, which it will probably do, say 35-7. Appalachian At Western The Apps lead the conference with a 1-0 mark and will be trying to protect their unblemished record against the Cats. Fullback Larry Lawing scored three times against Newberry last week, one a 51-yard run, gaining 175 yards in 22 carries; but the Mountaineers' passing game left something to be desired. Coach Dan Robinson unveiled two promising rookies in the Catamount backfield in the loss to Carson-Newman. Jim Williams at quarterback completed 12 of 17 passes for 134 yards, and Ellis "Jet" Johnson was outstanding at halfback. The pick is Appalachian by 21- 7. Last week's results: 5 right, 2 wrong.
