  • Intramural Dodgeball Team Yahtzee vs. The B.P.A. By Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine The first match of intramural Dodgeball was recently held, and the teams playing were as colorful as the game play. A self-proclaimed team of social misfits and sports enthusiasts, team Yahtzee looked to capitalize on a strong showing in intramural action from last year. Having taken titles in badminton, water polo, Ultimate Frisbee, and high showings in multiple other events contested, team Yahtzee has decided to go for the all-campus team title this year. Looking to stand in Yahtzees way at the start of things is The B.P.A. Apparently B.P.A stands for, well, whatever opponents want it to, and the team has no definitive answer for what it means. Formed by four or five co-workers of Papa's Pizza To-Go located on the backside of campus, the B.P.A. is driven by a general desire to wreck havoc, not to mention some sporty white headbands that make it evident just who is on the inside. For the first game, the two teams pitted against each other to decide the outcome of the first games of the year. Formatting rules says that teams will consist of only four players on the court at a time, three balls are in play, and due to an institution of a starting rule, each team is guaranteed at least one ball off the break. As games are usually quick, winners are determined in a best of five competitions. Team Yahtzee would see a quick exit to the first game as the B.P.A. got two balls off the break and dropped two Yahtzee members just as quickly as the game started. After a caught ball and a three-on-one rifling of balls at Yahtzees last remaining player, the B.P.A. would come out ahead, 1 game to Intramural Softball The Bentonites vs. Team Yahtzee By Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine Intramurals kicked off the softball season by starting mens, womens and coed competition. Intramurals play either seven innings or a set time limit, whichever comes first, and batters start with a 1-1 count. The two teams that played Thursday night were The Bentonites and once more, Team Yahtzee. The Bentonites are composed of roommates and hall mates throughout Benton Dorm. As mentioned before, Yahtzee is a band of guys from all over campus with an enthusiasm to win the all-campus title and have placed highly or won many competitions from past years. After setting line-up cards and getting warmed up, the players took to the field. Yahtzee would play in the field first as they drew home team. The Bentonites came to bat and stayed for a little while. Hit after hit, the Bentonites slapped singles through and around the Yahtzee fielders, managing to bat through the order in the first inning. Finally tallying two outs, Yahtzee finished the inning as left-fielder Chris Visi made an incredible play, jumping over head and landing head over heels for the final out. The first inning proved to be a representation of what the rest of the game curtailed as Yahtzee hit two line drives at Bentonite fielders, and after getting a man on base and having their clean-up hitter belt a double to right- center, the inning ended as the lead runner from Yahtzee slid into third, an illegal procedure and automatic out. After just one inning, the Bentonites led Yahtzee 4-0. The next three innings all held several commonalities. Over-throws, fielding errors, and people slipping from the dew covered grass frustrated both teams, but the Bentonites remained calm and only allowed two runs, managing to score eight more in the process. After four innings, the Bentonites were leading 12-2. In the fifth inning, it seemed as though Yahtzee had found composure as fielding improved and they put down the Bentonites after only a hit and a fielders choice. Team Yahtzee came to the plate with focus and their reputation on the eric Aver a Jearl-oft single. ands a sguble to score the runner from first, Yahtzee 21 WCnewsmagazine none. The next game saw promise for Yahtzee as they put down two members of the B.P.A., losing one in the process. With a three on two advantage, Yahtzees members moved in and fired, missing on one throw and having another ball caught by B.P.A. member, Ben Thedieck. Facing a three on two swing, Yahtzee would lose another member to a barrage of balls from their opponents. With a single remaining member left, Yahtzee saw game two slipping from a promising start. Several balls were thrown, and while others caromed off-course, one would be caught to even the playing field to two members each, but as the new member from Yahtzee came in, a ball was fired from behind play and caught the other off guard. The even field was moved to one on two, which wouldnt last long as the remaining member was eliminated. The final game would have the outcome of the bout decided as Yahtzee would start things off by eliminating two members from the B.P.A. Resilience for the B.P.A. would show through as both remaining members would catch balls to swing the teams from four-on-two to two-on-four. It was only a matter of time before the balls hurled connected and the B.P.A. devastated Yahtzee as they won, four members to none. The first match of the year was in the books, and the B.P.A. shone impressively as they knocked off Yahtzee 3 games to 0. The B.P.A. would later win its next match against Kappa Sig on forfeit, and Yahtzee redeemed themselves knocking off their opponent 3 games to 1. edged on. The next batter drew a walk, and with two men on, the Yahtzee clean- up hitter drove both in with a towering shot to center field, pulling a triple in the mean time. He would actually end up scoring on a throwing error as the throw to third for him went out of play. The score was 12-5, and Yahtzee seemed to be | energized. After a line-drive out for the first out of the inning, play was stopped because of the time limit. It goes unsaid whether or not Yahtzee would have continued the rally, ] but too much damage had been done by the Bentonites early on. The final score | | after time limit, Bentonites 12, Yahtzee 5. on oe News Magazine Hai Vutramurals, Writers Needed! we are Looking for students who participate in intramurals and want to tell the story of thetr team and others while experiencing all a wewspaper has to offer!
