ih : i" } 4) oN AD PgR PR MAL PPR PPD ALA University Theater Prepares 2005-06 Lineup By Russell Conover WGnewsmagazine The University Theater at Western Carolina University has an exciting lineup of plays planned for the upcoming year. The four productions scheduled to appear will feature a wide variety of subjects, time periods, tones, and historical information; and they will make this season a great one for the University Theater. The season opener will be The Complete History of America (Abridged) in Hoey Auditorium from September 28 to October 2, 2005. This play is a comedic look at some historical events of our country. It is fast-paced and burlesque in nature, with a wide variety of events depicted. The slapstick comedy used in the play will make it appealing to almost all audiences. Next to appear in Hoey Auditorium will be Godspel/ on November 16, 17, 19, and 20, 2005. This musical, which originated in the early 1970s, is a contemporary version of the story of the Gospel of St. Matthew. At WCU, the play will use miming and humor to make the story as upbeat as possible while remaining true to the legend of St. Matthew. Godspell will be a fun play to watch with its captivating comedy and interesting facts. From February 8 to February 12, 2006, The Tempest will be in Hoey Auditorium. This play tells the story of Prospero, an aristocrat and the Duke of Milan, who is overthrown, shipwrecked and cast away to live on an island with his daughter, his son, a magician and others. The occasional use of humor and the premise of the story will make The Tempest a hit at Western. To close out the season, Oklahoma! will appear in the Fine and Performing Arts Center from March 23 to March 26, 2005. This musical features Curly (a cowboy) and Jud (a hired farmhand) who are vying for the love of Laurey. Set at the turn of the century, Oklahoma! is a classic musical that Westerns University Theater is excited to feature on campus. Dr. Richard Beam, Director of University Theater at WCU, looks forward to the productions this year. He says the University Theater will be working with the Black Music Ensemble, the musical theater, and other groups on campus in some of its productions. Beam points out that Western is featuring two musicals this year, which is unusual for the school. He is pleased at the great variety of plays this year, which will combine to make this season a memorable one for the University Theater. Audiences interested in obtaining tickets to any of the University Theater's plays have three options. They can visit the Fine and Performing Arts Center box office on the campus of Western Carolina University; they can call (828) 227-2479, or they can log on to http://fapac.wcu.edu. The University Theater looks forward to a fun and exciting year at WCU. From Students to Educated Citizens - Learning Through Engagement- A SACS Initiative By Carol Burton * SACS The title above refers to a quality enhancement plan thatis being developed by members of Westerns community, including students, faculty and staff, as part of the Universitys bid for re- accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). SACS is responsible for developing and measuring institutional indicators of quality for colleges and universities in the 11 southernmost states, the Caribbean and Latin America. Western Carolina University, like the other 780+ colleges and universities that are members of SACS, conducts an intensive and exhaustive self-analysis of institutional effectiveness every ten years. While students may not be aware of the importance of such a review, they are critical participants in the process. Why is SACS so important to institutions, their students and their alumni? How do colleges conduct their internal reviews? What roles do students and alumni play in the review process? How will the SACS review process directly affect what students do on campus? These questions and others will be answered in a series of articles submitted to the Western Carolinian over the next few weeks by the Director of Westerns SACS Review, Carol Burton, a two-time alumna of the university. For additional information on the SACS Review at Western, visit the WCU-SACS website at .. or contact Burton at 227-7497 or email ;
