4 WCnewsmagazine WC Mailbox Sunami and Religion Joseph Ross, It was hard for me to read your article that resurrects the problem of evil, but | enjoyed the fact that you and others would venture to ask real questions about reality. It is hard because | know that there are thousands of people who not only lost their lives, but lost their lives to an eternal hell. Currently there are fathers lying in medical beds in agony, with little or no medical assistance and with the grief of having lost their wife and children and friends and family. | would like to respond to your article about what | believe is the unchanging reality, responding most specifically to the last couple of paragraphs. Ultimately what is in question is whether or not God is all knowing, all powerful, and all good. To question these attributes of God we are calling into question God's claims in the Bible. If God isnt these attributes, then Christianity is a hoax. | believe that it is hard for us to have a right conception of ourselves and God without understanding God as all powerful. To claim that God is not omnipotent is to claim that He is not God. It is to claim that he is less than perfect and could even be overcome. Everything in heaven and earth is God's, He is the ruler of all things, in His hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all (| Chronicles 29:11-13). All | things are from God, all things are through God, and all things are to God (Romans 11:36). Not only has God created all things from nothing, but He maintains all things. The nations are nothing; they are as a drop in the bucket and are as fine dust on scales (Isaiah 40:15-17). We dont add to Gods power. God doesn't need us. Yet God created us for his glory and for his pleasure and for his purposes and for the enjoyment of this world. {tis all about God. Does the clay question the potter? Does the patient ask the physician why shes giving him a new heart? Does the child ask the father why he was brought into the world? Maybe they do, but should they? For God to be God, he must also be all knowing. We cannot say that God knew about the flood in the days of Noah which would wipe out the entire world and knew about the death of His only Son on the cross and knew that Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of life and knew when Cain killed Abel, but yet didnt know that a giant Tsunami, which was caused by an earthquake would form and wipe over Asia killing over 200,000 people. In the Exposition of the Apostles Creed, philosopher Thomas Aquinas says that God is the universal cause of all things, and creates not only the form, but also the matter, so that He made all things out of nothing. There is nothing that can be hidden from God, all things lie before him (Hebrews 4:13). There is no where we can go, nothing we can say, nothing we can do that God doesn't already know (Psalm 139). When suffering comes up in the midst of a person or persons, the question often arises: Where was your God when this was happening? And | think that | can answer this by saying that my God was at the same place during your suffering as he was when His only son was dying on the cross. God had said that Jesus would suffer and die. It is even said that Jesus was handed over to the Jews by God's set purpose and foreknowledge (Acts 2:22-23). Yet did no good come from it and was no glory given to God for it? Of course not. It was done because people have jong disobeyed and forsaken God since creation, and the only way that that broken relationship could be restored was through Jesus. In conclusion, just as God was the decisive hand in the life of Job, he was also the decisive hand in this Tsunami. Ultimately, | dont know what God's purposes were for allowing the tsunami. [| have trouble understanding and grasping it. As | noted earlier, | hurt for the thousands of people who have died and am more hurt for many who have died never hearing of Jesus Christ dying on a cross to heal them from their disobedience. However, | do know that | am a finite creature under the submission of an infinite God who | will never be able to understand the mind of in this lifetime. | am thankful because | have undeservingly been not only created to enjoy Gods creation, but | have been undeservingly called into an eternal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
