WCnewsmagazine Track teams return to competition by Melissa Cabe WCnewsmagazine WCUs mens and womens track teams returned to action coming back from winter break at the Niswonger Invitational at the David Walker Track at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. Jan. 21 and 22. The teams had 13 top ten finishes, six for the women and seven for the men. There was only one first place finish, and that came on the ladies side. The womens 4x400 meter relay team, which consisted of seniors Leslie Martin and Jennifer Spivey, sophomore Asia Davis and freshman Raquel Ramseur, finished third right behind UNC- Charlotte and UNC-Chapel Hill. The ladies finished with a time of 3:46.75, almost three seconds faster than they were at their first meet at Appalachian State University (which broke the track meet record there). The mens 4x400 meter relay team also placed third at this meet, right behind Alabama and Georgia Tech. The team of senior James Barr, junior Charleton Grant, sophomore James Gregory and freshmen Zeb Johnson ran a time of 3:16.12. Johnson also competed in the open 400 meter dash. He ran that race in 49.12 seconds, which | earned him a 10th place finish. In the distance events, the ladies placed in three _ of the races. Seniors Martin and Tonya Edmonds , finished Sth and 10th, respectively, in the 800 meter | run. Martin ran it in 2:14.95 and Edmonds ran a _ personal best this season with a time of 2:20.59. | The distance medley team earned a 6th place finish _ at this meet. Junior Deanna Kulesz ran the 1200 meter part of the race, freshman Brooke Sadler ran the 400 meter part, senior Tonya Edmonds ran the 800 meter part and freshman Kerrie Savery ran the 1600 meter part. The ladies finished in a time of 13:02.96. Kulesz also ran the one mile race and placed 9th with a time of 5:24.07. On the mens side in the distance events, their distance medley team placed 6th. Senior James Irwin, junior Lawrence Briscoe, sophomore Jamar Frazier and freshman Freddie Cameron ran a time of 10:35.85. In the open 3000 meter run, junior Adam Puett ran a time of 8:24.58, good enough for a 6th place finish. It looked as though Puett was going to place 7th in this event but in the final straightaway to the finish line he ran down Alex Korir from Alabama to take his 6th place spot. In the field events sophomore Brittany Whitaker placed 9th with a jump of 1.65 meters (55.0) while on the mens side Briscoe had a three-way tie for8th place in this event. He cleared 1.98 meters (66.0) along with John Ohonkwo from Charlotte and Dan Oseth from Radford University. In the mens weight throw junior Kevin McAlmont placed 10th with a throw of 15.99 meters. The only 1st place finish came from senior Laura Tieszan in the pole vault. Tieszan jumped 3.65 meters (11'11.75). Tieszan also placed1st at the teams first meet at App. State, where she cleared 3.66 meters (120). In the mens pole senior Wes Willoughby had a six-way tie for 6th place with a vault of 4.30 meters (14'1.25). This height was a little over four under his personal best. Both teams will be traveling to Clemson University to compete in the Clemson Championships this Friday and Saturday.
