  • Sports- The Western Carolinian Page 11 Thursday, November 9, 1989 Wayne "Mr. Versatile" Tolleson Settles Into Lasting Baseball Career Fred Mason Staff Writer Wayne Tolleson, of Spartanburg, South Carolina has proven to be a gem in the crown of WCU athletics. Tolleson started with WCU in 1974, substituting as a wide receiver for Jerry Gaines, who is currently the All-Time Receiving Yardage Leader. Gaines was out for a game against Appalachian, and Tolleson started in his place. He made a good impression by scoring the game-winning touchdown reception. Called "Mr. Versatile," he began to rack up honors in football, baseball, and academics. Tolleson was named to the Southern Conference All- Academic Team. He was named Southern Conference Athlete of the Year (1978), Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Year (1979), WNC Athlete of the Year (1978), and the 1978 National Pass Receiving Champion, ceiving Champion. In his football career, Tolleson set the record for most single-game points (25) against Volleyball Team Prepares For Upcoming Tournament (Photob) Lady Cats played ETSU Tuesday night for Southern Conference Kathleen Murphy Staff Writer The Western Carolina Jniversity women's volleyball earn was in action Halloween light in Reid Gym. The Lady ats faced ACC Power Clemson and were defeated 15-3, 15-5, and 15-10 in a 3-game sweep. The Lady Tigers came into Cullowhee with a 24-6 record and undefeated in the ACC Conference. They are expected to win the ACC title this year. The Lady Cats were on a roll before their match-up with Clemson. They had a five- match winning streak going into the Halloween night contest. But the Tigers slowed the Catamounts by effectively keeping Regina Brown and Jackie Chang from getting into any rhythm during the game. The Lady Cats were not helped by the fact that sophomore Kris Parker was hampered by an injury. Clemson was almost impenetrable at the net. The Cats had opportunities to put balls away, but Clemson was always there with a block. The Lady Cats return to Conference play when they travel to Appalachian State to face the Mountaineers. The Catamounts are hoping to keep their number one position in the Conference standings. They have only one loss this season in the Southern Conference. The Southern Conference tournament will take place November 10-12 in Johnson City, TN. Before the tournament, the Cats will play host to UNC- Asheville and East Tennessee State in Reid Gym. Matches begin at 7 pm. Panthers Defeat Lady Tennis Team 9-0 Cats Kathleen Murphy Staff Writer The Western Carolina University ladies' tennis team hosted Georgia State University last Monday in their final match of the Fall season. The Lady Cats went into the contest with a 5-match winning streak, but Georgia State halted that streak by blanking the Cats 9-0. The Panthers of Georgia State were an extremely tough match for the Cats. Coach David Johnson stated that his team played well in certain spots, but overall he felt that they could have played much better. "The overall score does not reflect the number of matches we played in," Johnson said. Georgia State has been a strong team over the years. Their team is expected to contend for the Trans-America Conference title this year. The Panthers compiled an 18- 7 record last year. The Lady Cats' match against the Panthers is reflective of the strength of the Catamounts' schedule this year. Following a brief layoff, the Cats will be back in action against such division I opponents as Eastern Kentucky, which has been a perennial tennis power over the years. The Catamounts will go on to face Xavier University in Ohio, then to face West Virginia, North Alabama, and St. Bonaventure of New (PhotobyJefl Mason) Lady Cat spends an afternoon on the courts. York. Allot these teams will be difficult matches for the Cats. The schedule doesn't get any easier in the conference, but Johnson feels that the Catamounts will be competitive in every match. With teams like defending champion Furman and former champion UTC, the Cats will have a tough fight on theirhands. But the Cats are up to that challenge. The Lady Cats will also face local schools, such as Mars Hill College and UNC Asheville. The Cats' outlook is very good. "The team has come a long way in the three years I have been here," stated Val Bako, ajuniorfromTampa, Fla. Lenoir-Rhyne College in 19/5, most passes caught in a season (73 in 1977), and most touchdown passes caught (7 in 1977 and 1978). However, baseball seems to be his game. Tolleson has a long list of baseball records, such as most stolen bases (84), most career runs scored (141), most career total bases (198), most career hits (143), most career times reaching base (298) among other "mosts." Tolleson started playing with the Texas Rangers, then moved to the Chicago White Sox, then finally to the New York Yankees, where he has remained for three years. "I think there are several reasons why I can control the pressure. I remember that life is not dependent on just baseball. I work at it as hard as I can, but I don't let it rule me," said Tolleson. ?r"'**!!i ^ * Wayne Tolleson 1974-78. , Western Carolina University Pl.^.u Dy: ...K ho- , Split End, oil) Go Cats Go!!! f^CITY LIGHT6 New and Used Books Comics and Magazines New Age and Classical Music Unique Selection of Foreign Videos for Rent # "Ask Us About Special Orders" 55 East Main Street, Sylva, NC 28779 (704) 586-9499 "I MARIA'S MEXICAN PUEBLO "Original Mexican Food " Tacos ♦ Burritos ♦ Enchiladas ♦ Tamales All Full Course Meals are $1.00 Off With Ad.
