Kay Weden is the Directing professor in charge of the Monologues. Lucille Whiten is a Graduate Assistant for the Women's Center and a co-producer of the Vagina Monologues here on campus. She hopes that V- Day will spread a sense of awareness and stop violence. Leigh Bartles another graduate student here at Western and a co-organizer for V-day says that she hopes that V-Day will encourage the community to take part in the Womens Center issues and realize that there is domestic violence all around. Sara Stoltenburg, Director of Womens Programs an the Womens Center says that the fact that there are more and more students arriving on campus gives the community more and more of an unfortunate chance to see domestic violence occur. The more students you have, the more often it happens. Until we can get women to communicate more, the violence will continue, Sara said. Sandy Frazier, Development Director for R.E.A.C.H., says that for so long, violence against women has been something that we don't talk about, especially in this area. Sandy went on to say the Old English Law of Rule of Thumb was inherited into Appalachian Culture through immigration. The Rule of Thumb was a law that stated that men had the right to beat their wives as long as they used nothing larger than the width of their thumbs todoso. Sandy says that this _ principle is deeply imbedded into Appalachia. It is time for us as a community to stand up and for men, women, and children, to say NO!" That is what the Vagina Monologues are about: to hear true, real- newsmagazine life experiences and accounts of domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women and girls. More educational outlets, not being silent and basically talking about the issue more often is what is important. Sara stated that there are 35 cast members this year for the Vagina Monoijogues, 10 to 20 volunteers and more community members and faculty at Western that support the cause directly this year. Rachel All is a participant in the event and says, | hope the community gains a better sense of what abused women go through. Dela Merritt, another student participant, says that she hopes the audience walks away with a more open mind and a better sense of understanding about their own bodies and about what happens to others. This is obviously a growing event, and every year V-Day gets larger and larger with the increase in participants. Among some famous participants are EVE the well-known Hip-Hop artist, Oprah Winfrey and many more. Western will be participating in this world-wide event on Feb. 15-17. All shows are at 7 p.m. in the University Centers theatre. Tickets are $6 for students and $10 for all others.
