  • Womens Basketball Falls to Chattanooga, 65-46 Jennifer Gardner reaches 500 career rebounds Feb. 5, 2004 Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Lady Mocs forced 30 turnovers, which resulted in 23 points as Western Carolina fell victim to Chattanooga, 65-46, Thursday night at McKenzie Arena. With the loss, the Catamounts drop to 7-13 overall and 6-7 in the Southern Conference. The Mocs improve to 19-2 overall and remain perfect in conference action at 14-0, holding the nations longest winning streak at 17 straight games. Chattanooga managed just three points in the first five minutes, but turned a three-point deficit into a 16-6 advantage with a 13-0 spurt in slightly more than five minutes. Four of those points came from WCU turnovers. : Balanced scoring through the first half lifted UTC to a 31-19 halftime edge. After the Catamounts scored the first bucket of the second half, the Lady Mocs went on a 12-2 run and again, four of those points came off Catamount miscues. Mayes ended up with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting. The Catamounts were able to get within five points with 41 seconds on the clock when Allen stole the ball and fed Lori Tanner for an easy lay in. Lauren Trantham celebrated her senior night by recording the 24th double-double of her career with 13 points and 14 rebounds. The Rapid City, S.D., native did so with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3.95 meters (12- 11.5). Robinson and Tieszen Finish With WCU Records at Clemson Meet e Willoughby finishes third at ASU Invitational Clemson, S.C. - At the Clemson Heptathion and Pentathlon, Catamount junior Laura Tieszen finished fourth overall in the womens pentathlon with a Western Carolina Record score of 2,889. Also topping the WCU record books was junior Bobby Robinson who finished 13th overall in the mens heptathlon with a Catamount record score of 4,188. Senior Christel Kirkpatrick and freshman Ryan Fussell also represented Western at the meet. Additionally over the weekend, the Catamount mens pole vaulters and shot putters competed at the ASU Invitational in Boone, N.C. Sophomore Wes Willoughby tied for third in the mens pole vault, clearing 14-5.25, while Christian Benson cleared 13- 5.25 to tie for seventh. Morris Sanders came in 13th in the mens shot put with a distance of 41-8.75 to lead the Cats. Felipe Foster tied for 15th at 41-6.5, Shamar Allen finished 25th at 37-8.75 and Kevin McAlmont came in 28th with a distance of 36-3.5.
