The track was closed to the public effective Friday, Aug. 8, and will remain closed until the first phase of the project is complete in late December. The initial phase includes moving the track about 100 feet to the north, enlarging it to eight lanes, and incorporating a soccer field in the middle of the track. Phase two of the project, to start later in the fall and end by late spring, includes construction of eight tennis courts and a building that will house team rooms, training rooms, rest rooms, press box and concession stand. Visitors and members of the campus community are still able to use the jogging trail that encircles the intramural field behind Reid Gymnasium and the golf driving range area, although construction also is resulting in changes to the route. The university has extended the Walker "A" parking lot, located between Cullowhee Creek and N.C. 107 near the track and soccer field, and that expansion has claimed a portion of the jogging trail. Construction crews have built a new loop that winds parallel to the campus picnic area, eventually connecting back to the existing trail. Off-campus visitors using the trail should use the new gravel lot at the end of the Walker "A" lot, the picnic area parking lot, or the parking lot between the campus bookstore and print shop, said Gene McAbee, director of university police. "Because of our expected parking crunch this year, we have changed the spaces that were reserved for users of the track to upperclassman resident spaces," McAbee said. Walkers and runners also may take advantage of a new jogging trail that has been built around the intramural sports fields behind the University Outreach Center and across from the Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
