  • by nic bowman | WCnewsmagazine 2.0 en senior quarterback Brian Gaither came to school at Western Carolina, he had no idea what to expect. Three schools, WCU, North Carolina A&T and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, recruited Gaither. He chose WCU because he had a feeling, an inclination, Gaither said. The stats he has put up dont lie, and his inclination seems to have been right. While at WCU, Gaither has played in 25 games for the Catamounts. Gaither eclipsed the 4,000-yard career passing mark versus Wofford and now has 4,246, seventh on the WCU all-time list. Gaithers 350 career completions and 639 career attempts put him at sixth on both of the schools all-time lists. For the season, Gaither is 174-of-293 for 1,804 yards. His 174 completions this season rank sixth on the WCU single-season list. Gaither has a 50.9 completion percentage, and this season alone he has thrown for 2,442 yards and 13 touchdowns. He averages 111 yards per game, giving him a quarterback efficiency of 113.89 percent. With stats like these, NFL scouts from all over the United States have been drooling over the 6-3, 220-pound senior from Winston-Salem. I came to WCU because it was a small town, I like the city but I also wondered what the mountains would have to offer, Gaither said. Before coming to WCU, Gaither led Mt. Tabor high school to the 1998 Piedmont Conference championship and helped his team post a 13-1 record. During that season he completed 54 percent of his passes and threw for over 1,400 yards with 18 touchdowns. His stellar year landed him a spot in the annual East-West All Star game. While at Mt. Tabor, Gaither also played on the basketball team. Nevertheless, when Gaither came to WCU he was really an unpolished quarterback. I always wanted to be a wide receiver, but the coaching staff and the experience I gained from the different quarterbacks that were here have really helped me to become a better player, Gaither said. After sharing the reigns with Pat Cilento for the past two seasons, Gaither has sole control of the Catamount offense this season.I wasnt upset with coach Briggs decision. Of course you want to be the one out on the field, but you have to think about whats good for the team, Gaither said. As the one taking nearly all the snaps this year, Gaither leads the Southern Conference in both passing yards and total offense.I wasnt real nervous during the preseason knowing that I was going to be the starter this year, Gaither said. I think that I was so excited about actually starting this year, tha nervousness didnt really sink in. : Gaither tied a Whitmire Stadium record with four touchdown passes versus Johnson C. Smith. Then, he backed that performance up by completing 22 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns to earn SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors. Three weeks later, he completed a school-record 35 passes against eleventh-ranked Georgia Southern. A week later versus eighth-ranked Wofford, Gaither was just four completions shy of breaking his career completions record once again. Gaither now ranks seventh nationally with 21.75 completions per game. Stats like these have NFL scouts calling and attending WCU football practices. Every week there is at least one scout at practice watching him and asking about him.T didnt really think that an NFL scout would come to WCU, but when I was being recruited the coaches told me if you are good enough, scouts will find you, Gaither said. Basically that and wanting to see the WCU football program succeed is what has driven me to work so hard day in and day out. and hopefully back. Brian Gaither in action at NC State. Besides being a standout on the football field, Gaither also is a standout in the community. Every week he is involved with some kind of community service project. Gaither has helped out at the Community Table in Sylva, as well as visiting hospitals and nursing homes. I like getting involved and helping out. This community has given so much to me that I love giving back anyway I can, Gaither said. Gaither is a marketing major at WCU, but he hopes it isnt a marketing job that takes him back to the big city. Rather, he would like to follow the path of recent WCU players like David Patten, Brad Hoover or David Rivers as players in the NFL. iy
