Students to Present Research Results at National Meeting Geology Seniors Daniel Butz and Christopher Foldesi will present their laboratory research results at the Southeastern Sectional Meeting of the Geological Society of America in Knoxville, Tennessee, April 5-6. The two will report on several discoveries they have made, after doing microscope research on samples which were collected by them in the Argentine Andes last August. Butz and Foldesi's presentation, in poster format, is entitled Provenance of the Payogastilla Group: A Preliminary Uplift History of the Central Andes, Salta Province,*NW Argentina. The published abstract of their work will receive international distribution. In it, they describe the sequence of mountain-building events which occurred 5-15 million years ago, producing the spectacular plateaus, ranges, and basins over a part of the east side of the Andes Mountains in northern Argentina. Their information was gleaned by studying thin, transparent slices of sandstones to determine the make-up of rock fragments that compose some of the sand grains. The samples were collected from a 3.5 km thick pile of sedimentary rocks exposed between two ranges of the Eastern Cordillera. "Different sand grains come from different mountain ranges. When we see the appearance of a new grain type, then we know that a new mountain range must have been rising," said Butz. "We noted four significant changes," added Foldesi. The two traveled to Argentina on Explorers Club Youth Activity Fund Grants which were awarded to them last summer. These funds supplemented money from an American Chemical Society—Petroleum Research Fund Grant received by their collaborator, Dr. James Reynolds of the Geosciences & Anthropology Department.
