  • February 14, 2002 SPORTS 13 Features Editor Lays Down Baseball Challenge By Eric Newsom Features Editor The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. — James Earl Jones as Terence Mann in "Field of Dreams." The other day, I was chatting with fellow Carolinian writer Sean Bilichka outside of Joe Meig's Themes in Film class. It was a cold night, and we were watching "Field of Dreams" to discuss it's reflection of this semester's theme, America. Now I know Sean's views on baseball, those being that he thinks it's about as interesting as curling is in the Winter Olympics. I, however, come from a baseball household where my father and I would go at odds whenever my Houston Astros and his basement- dwelling Chicago Cubs would find themselves playing each other. Everyone in my family knows and respects the game of baseball. My mother knows which teams are American League and which are National. My little sister understands and respects designated hitters and the infield fly rule. Arguments have been settled and lost over games of Bases Loaded for Nintendo. But Sean doesn't like baseball. On Sports Sean doesn't respect baseball. Sean barely tolerates baseball's existence on this planet. He sees, and I can't fully disagree with him, that football is rapidly becoming the National Pastime (along with bowling, but that was last week's column). So we're standing outside of Prof. Meig's class, and he turns to me and he says: "Baseball takes less skill to play than football." I would like to clarify at this point that Sean has never played a game of baseball in his life. As far as I know, he's never touched a baseball bat for the purposes of hitting a ball (Smashing windshields and robbing convenience stores? That's a different story.). To be blunt, Sean Bilichka has no idea how much skill it takes to play baseball. Football's a hard sport to play, don't get me wrong. But it doesn't take more skills to play than baseball, and at the very least, they are evenly matched in terms of mental and physical abilities. Sean says no, football is definitely much harder to play than baseball. And more fun to watch at that. So, I figured I'd call Sean out in a public venue, and maybe provide a little entertainment for the general reading audience. I don't want Sean to try pitching, he might throw out his arm, and if he fielded, it might take a bad hop and knock out his good eye. No, I figure the way to settle this is to see how well Sean can take a swing at a fastball in the nearest batting cage. Sean Bilichka vs. The Sport of Baseball, for all of the chips, with former Major Leaguer Don Mattingly looking on, should Sean accept the challenge? But will he? Stay tuned.
