  • WESTERN 16 CAROLINIAN GET A LIFE February 21,2001 (L-G^HP OJKPO^TT OPI Popular singer and acoustic guitarist Christine Kane returns to Western Carolina University on Thursday, March 1, as part of Women's History Month. The 9pm concert will take place at the Illusions nightclub in the A.K. Hinds University Center. Tickets are $2 for Western students with valid identification, $4 for all others. .Kane's music career started when she left a very prestigious public relations firm, sold everything she owned except her guitar and moved to Asheville to play music. She soon became a regular on the Southeast music circuit and recorded her first compact disc, "This Time Last Year," in a friend's basement. It wasn't long before Kane started opening for popular performers, including Los Lobos, Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin, James McMurtry and Rosanne Cash. "Christine's voice and her eye on the world are a real inspiration and joy to me," says Cash. Kane's second compact disc, "A Thousand Girls," was released in 1998. The Apple computer company chose this recording to demonstrate its popular QuickTime software at national exhibitions and on its website. She recently released her third compact disc, "Live." Hinds University Center. Tickets for the show are $2 for Western students, $4 for all others. Redmond performs original poetry that tells stories about her life and African-American heritage to teach audiences to respect their own stories. "It's the way her words draw you into a seemingly innocuous subject and singe you with the fury of intelligence scorned," said London Time Oiit magazine. An international performer, Redmond has won numerous awards and fellowships including the Carrie McCray Literary Award, and study fellowships with the Vermont Writing Center and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Remaining grounded will be important in keeping this love alive. Taurus Taureans could also be called tortoises, as they proceed with most everything slowly but surely. As someone that looks at everything with the long-term result in mind, you are seldom impulsive. Perhaps a little impulsiveness would be good for you. Try bungee jumping. Gemini Your energy level is on a continuing high making everything seem easy and fun for you. With school and work a breeze, there seems to be nothing you can't accomplish right now. Before you become bored, find a new activity to take on to release some of that energy. Try boxing or donating blood. Cancer Insecurity is one of the main downfalls of a Cancer. Constant reassurance of being loved is a necessity. Cancer's optimum mate is a Taurus, as these signs compliment one another well. If you are feeling lonely, spending time with a Taurean friend will cheer you right up. Leo Work and school are pressing down on you right now, and money's not been real friendly lately either. But chin up, it can only get better. Leos are known for their hard work and dedication. There is no way you can fail as long as you persevere. Virgo Your love of knowledge is scoring you big points with teachers and paying off well in terms of grades. However, be careful of becoming too bookwormish; make sure you take time out to have fun. Don't shy away and hide behind the homework excuse all the time. Libra A nervous breakdown may be in your future. With stresses piling up all over the place, it would be very easy to fall apart, but stay strong; remember trite but true cliches like "Every cloud has a silver lining" and "It's always darkest before the dawn." Things can only get better. Scorpio With Mars as one of your ruling planets, becoming aggressive has never been hard for you. Facing your fears, however, has never been something you've been good at. The best thing for you to do would be to face your past, and then break away from it for good. Sagittarius Loneliness may be a familiar feeling for you this week as you and your friends seem to be too busy to do anything together. Take heart though. This time alone is just what you need. You have something to think very seriously on. Capricorn Always ready to take on new projects and new responsibilities, you are rarely bored, but often too tired to think at the end of the day. Take heed and don't wear yourself too thin, chances are you will not die tomorrow, so slow down a little. Aquarius You've been invited to go somewhere with a new friend and are debating whether you should go or not. OF COURSE YOU SHOULD! As an Aquarius, you are very friendly, but often slow to trust others and let them in. Don't worry about any of that for a awhile, and just have some fun. Pisces You have managed to successfully avert several obstacles that have emerged on your road to happiness. Your next step is to take a look around you; while a budding relationship may have withered, another one may already be in the works.
