WESTERN 20 CAROLINIAN SPORTS February 21,2001 Catamount Football Signs Fresh Talent By Mike Poston Asst. Features Editor Some say things are looking up for the Catamount team, and, with the type of recruiting class they had this year, that statement could be more accurate than anyone might think. The Cats had 25 students sign letters of intent to attend Western Carolina from both high school and junior college. This sounds rather ordinary until fans discover that six recruits are from Georgia, two from South Carolina, two from Tennessee, and one from Virginia. The importance of this fact is that for the first-time the Cats have had the ability to seriously recruit athletes from out-of-state, including the Atlanta area, which is one of closest urban areas to Western Carolina. The main reason for the team's ability to seriously recruit out-of-state students is the renewed commitment from the university's administration. Bill Bleil, head coach of the Cats, said, " The commitment is really there, they [the administration] want to win." This new commitment from the administration will help the team to compliment their ability of signing talented players in the Western North Carolina region with the ability to gain solid players from other states. Bleil is pleased with his current recruits and says, "They are a good class with the potential to become a great class." The signees include Ronnie Boyd, who was the Western Athletic Conference Player of the year from Erwin high school in the Asheville area. As a senior he rushed for 944 yards and 12 touchdowns. For his career, he rushed for 1,854 yards and scored 24 touchdowns. Also from the Buncombe County area are Wes Rumbough, who like Boyd attended Erwin, and Pat Newcomb, from North Buncombe High. Rumbough, a linebacker, was a first team Asheville Citizen Times All- Star and lead the Erwin team with 163 tackles, 90 of which were solo. Newcomb, another linebacker, was a first team All-Western North Carolina selection and a first team selection of the Asheville Citizen Times All-Star team. He led the North Buncombe team with 133 tackles, 17 for loss, 4 forced fumbles and a sack. There are nine other signees from around the state. Three offensive lineman, two wide receivers, one linebacker, one quarterback, one back and one defensive tackle. The offensive lineman are Jason Chambers-Mooresville High, Josh Galloway-Rosman High and Jerrett Wilson from North Rowan High. Chambers was selected to play in the East/West All-Star game, Galloway as a member of the Asheville Citizen Times All-Star team as an honorable mention, and Wilson was selected to play in both the Shrine Bowl and the East/West game. The receivers are Tracey Smith, from Bunn High, and Craig Younce from Franklin High. Smith was a two- time 1A All-State performer and had 33 receptions, 467 yards and 17 touchdowns in his senior year. Younce was named to the first team of the All- Western Athletic Conference and All- Western North Carolina. He caught 56 passes for 1,028 yards and 13 touchdowns. The lone quarterback is Josh Lee from A.L. Brown High in Kannapolis. He passed for 1,800 yards as a senior and was a East/West All-Star selection. The one back is Todd McLaurin from Hobbton High in Newton Grove. As a senior he rushed for 1,292 yards and scored 31 touchdowns leading his team to the third round of the playoffs. The defensive tackle is Luis Herron from West Cateret High in Morehead City. He led his team in tackles last season and is also ranked number one in his weight class as a wrestler. Caleb Reel is a linebacker from East Lincoln High. He totaled 73 hits as a senior, 11 for losses. He is a member of both the All-Western Foothills Conference team and the All-Gaston Gazette team. From across the state line in Georgia, the Cats recruited six players including Tyler Norman from Duluth High School. Norman was named linebacker of the year for Gwinnett County for all classifications. He was 5 A All-Gwinnett County selection and led Duluth with 131 tackles in ten games. Also from Georgia are Teddy Burgis, Deonte Cook, John Bush, Chase Patterson and Rico Reese. Burgis is a six-foot wide receiver from Pope High School in Marietta, Ga. He was named to the second team All- State by the Marietta Daily Journal. As a senior, he caught ten touchdown passes and earned both regional and All-Cobb County honors. Cook, from Marietta High School in Marietta,Ga is a five-foot, 11-inch defensive back. As a junior he led his team in interceptions, and he is also currently ranked as the top 100-meter high hurdler in Georgia. Bush is a linebacker from Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Ga. He has been named honorable mention All-Cobb County twice and ranked third in tackles both seasons. Patetrson, from Roswell, Ga. is a six foot-four inch, 275 pound offensive lineman, and he was a first team All- Cobb County lineman. Reese, also from Pebblebrook High, is a defensive end that led his team in sacks for the past three seasons and was selected as a second team all-county player. The two players from South Carolina are Mike Reeder and Jada Sullivan. Reeder is from Wagener- Salley High in Wagner, SC. He is 6-3 wide receiver and was named Receiver of the Year in Region 5-A. He is also listed as one of the top ten receivers in the state. Sullivan is from Hillcrest High in Simpsonville, SC. He is a 6-1 defensive back that was selected as an All-Region defensive safety and All- Region wide receiver. The two signees from Tennessee are James Rainer and Austin Hunter. Hunter is a kicker from Crosby High in Crosby, Tenn. and was named to the 1A All-Region team. Rainer is wide receiver form Alcoa High in Alcoa, Tenn. He was named twice to the first team All-State and accumulated 4,250 total yards and 50 touchdowns in his career. The lone Virginian is a 6-3, 320- pound offensive lineman from Newport News, Va. Jerry Gardner was named to the first team All-District and All-Area teams as a defensive tackle. The Cats also have two junior college transfers, Pat Cilento and Javon Howell. Cilento, from Brookeville, Md., is a 6-2, 200-pound quarterback that was a second team All-American selection by JuniorCollegeFoot- ball.com. Howell is from Tarboro, NC and was selected to the first team All- Northeastern Football Conference.
