  • February 21,2001 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 19 Southern Conference Race Heats Up Down Stretch The Southern Conference The Southern Conference race enters the home stretch and while the North Division has four of its six seeds locked in for the upcoming Mountain Dew Southern Conference Tournament, the South Division remains a jumble. The tournament begins in March 1 at the BI-LO Center in Greenville, SC. In the North, East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro remain in the race for the number one seed. The Bucs can clinch the top seed with a home win against VMI on Wednesday, February 21. However, if the Bucs falter and lose their last two games, at home to VMI and at Wofford, and UNCG defeats Western Carolina, both teams would finish the regular season at 11-5. UNCG would own the advantage in a tie breaker by virtue of its sweep of VMI during the regular season. Appalachian State is locked in at the number three seed, Davidson in fourth, VMI is fifth and Western Carolina will be sixth in the North. The only two seeds set in the South are at number one where College of Charleston will hold the top spot for the third straight year. Furman is also assured the number six seed in the South. In between, there remain as many as eight different scenarios that will affect the middle of the standings. Entering the final seven games of the regular season, Georgia Southern, The Citadel and Chattanooga remain locked in a race for the coveted second seed which comes with a first round bye in the 2001 Mountain Dew Southern Conference Tournament. Georgia Southern and Chattanooga each have multiple ways in which to gain the number two seed. Ironically, those two clubs will meet Saturday, Feb. 24, at Chattanooga. Georgia Southern can lock up the number two seed with a win against the Mocs. However, if UTC wins on its home court, the Mocs and Eagles LMP PRESENTS THIS WEEK GLENIS REDMOND FEBRUARY 26, 9 PM ILLUSIONS $2 STUDENTS $4 NON CHRISTINE KANE MARCH 1ST, 9PM ILLUSIONS *BYOB $2 STUDENTS $4 NON would both finish at 9-7. UTC would earn the number two seed by virtue of its season sweep of Georgia Southern. If UTC wins and The Citadel defeats Furman, that would cause a three-way tie for second with all three clubs finishing 9-7. In that scenario, Chattanooga would earn the two seed with The Citadel third and Georgia Southern fourth. That tie is broken by comparing head to head competition among the three tied teams. The Mocs will have a 3-1 record against The Citadel and Georgia Southern, while the Bulldogs would be 2-2 and GSU would be 1-3. Wofford, currently in fifth in the South at 7-8, can finish fourth with a win against ETSU on Saturday and a loss by Chattanooga. The SoCon's first tie breaker procedure is how teams fared in head to head competition. If that fails to break the tie, the next formula compares the tied teams against the highest seeded team in the conference not involved in the tie. For instance, if two teams tie for second and they split their regular season series, the next step is to compare how each team fared against the number one seed in the division. If that does not break the tie, you continue down through the standings until the tie is broken. If each team had the same wins and losses against the same opponents, a coin flip would determine the higher seeded team. In the case of a three-way tie, the first consideration is each team's record against the other two teams involved in the tie. If that does not create a clear winner, then each team's record against the highest seeded team not involved in the tie would come into play. If that does not break the tie, a blind draw would be held by The Southern Conference to determine the seedings. However, in 2001, there is only one possible scenario that would lead to a coin flip and that would be in the case of a tie between Wofford and Chattanooga. u& frfr^K ^ What's Happening at* the Fitness Center Spring 2001 Hours Monday - Thursday 6 am - 8 am, 11 am -11 pm Friday 6 am -10 pm Saturday 9 am - 5 pm Sunday 1 pm - 9 pm Aerobics Classes * Hip Hop * * Kickboxing * * Circuit * * Interval * * Step * * Slide * * Cardio * * Water aerobics * Upcoming Events Thursday, March l from 8-9 pm Nutrition for Fitness (Ueid ice) - Join Nutritionist Karen White and Fitness Director Karen Oldham to learn how to combine nutrition and exercise to get ready for Spring Break in a healthy way.
