  • October 25, 2000 GET A LIFE 13 Music Review Poetry and Guitars: The Wallflowers'' Breach By Hanna Crane Staff Writer A friend said that The Wallflowers have it made because their lead singer has that smoldering, tortured artist look about him and has the last name of Dylan, so they are destined for success. But rather than settle for such an assumption, Jakob and friends have produced yet another album, called Breach, using their own sound so that it would be foolish to waste time comparing them to musical legends. The song "Some Flowers Bloom Dead" is one of the faster songs on the album. The concept behind it is that some relationships are cursed from the beginning, they are over before they really get off the ground. But rather than being a whiny song about a relationship that wasn't meant to be, this song is trying to convince the other member of the relationship that life needs to go on because some things just don't work out. Dylan's voice is quite persuasive for the cause of the person who realizes that their love has run its course. "Up From Under" combines a sweet folk guitar, airy strings, and beautiful lyrics to create one of the best songs on the album. It's a quiet piece that doesn't demand a lot of attention or require a lot of thought. Basically, it's the story of a guy who has a hard life; he left home and has forgotten his promise to write to his mother. He steals, begs, and cheats his way through life until he meets a girl who changes his mind about things. The lyrics are so poetic: "..Those days before I met you, girl, were just ice cream falling on the shoes of my world, I'm so happy when we're looking up from under Babylon". Finally, a treat hidden at the end of the album is a ditty following "Birdcage". Since there is nothing about the little piece in the album notes, it is hard to tell exactly what is going on here. At first blush, it sounds like Dylan is singing about Baby Blue, but it's hard to distinguish if he's saying Baby Blue or Baby Bird after listening to it several times. Musically it sounds like a song in a music box and (maybe this is a real reach) but if you play a sample of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" simultaneously with this song, they mesh nicely. Whether or not it is intentional is debatable, but it sure would be nice to think it was not an accident. Breach is the ideal soundtrack for relaxing or writing that huge paper; it's multi-purpose which is always a good thing. Someone complained that the music of The Wallflowers is too slow to his liking, and in all fairness, if you prefer some heavy-duty rock or hip hop, this is not going to get you excited. But with its mix of rock and folk, Breach is pleasing plenty of ears out there.
