  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN October 11, 2000 WCU Welcomes Women's Rugby Team Melissa Dills Staff Writer Rugby is once again becoming a popular sport in the United States. It would stand to reason that Western Carolina University would be interested in finding a niche for its own rugby teams as well. Students have probably heard of the men's rugby team, but how many are aware of the newly organized women's rugby team here on WCU's campus? Last semester the men's rugby team hosted a co-ed rugby game, and the game was preceded by several practices. These practices had a really good turnout of women who enjoyed the game. They were eager to get a team of their own started. How many college students wouldn't be intrigued at the prospect of having a women's rugby team? With that interest in mind, one student took the initiative to tackle the administrative tasks required to get the team organized officially. Kelly Garrett, employed by Western's fitness center, was responsible for getting the word out and getting the club up and started. Garrett also serves as president of the club. The new fall semester gave the club that opportunity. Practices began with the first week of classes back in August. At the time, around 14-16 girls showed up. In order to play a game of rugby, the team needs 15 players. As the semester has progressed, around 23 girls have attended practice, and the team is 24 strong. The women have practice Monday through Thursday from 4-6 p.m., but they also have workouts outside of regular practice. Many of the players run and lift weights on their own time. r^^m wm ^\ \ f^ . i photo by Elizabeth Barnes WCU s scrumhalf making a tackle against Tennessee on Saturday. The team's coach is Chris Busch. He is a graduate of WCU and used to play for the men's rugby team. Busch volunteered to help as the new coach for the women's team. Even though the women's rugby team is a fairly recent addition to WCU, they have worked hard throughout. Just this past weekend, (Oct. 7-8), the team traveled to a tournament hosted at Appalachian State University. This tournament, Ructoberfest, included teams from all across the state of North Carolina as well as many more teams from across the southeast region of the US. Many people associated with rugby attended as well. Elizabeth Barnes, a senior student and rugby player, said, "There were several USA Rugby representatives there as well as head referees." WCU's team was scheduled to play four games at the tournament to see who would play in the finals. "There were five women's teams, including WCU," said Barnes. " We see RUGBY on bottom of page 8 Chicken will Fly at Southern Culture on the Skids Show By Eric Newsom Staff Writer The first time I went to see the camp rockabilly trio Southern Culture on the Skids, I didn't know what to expect. The crowd was filing through the doors at T r e m o n t Music Hall in Charlotte with greased back black hair, tight jeans, black muscle shirts with rolled-up sleeves and wallet chains and I felt a little out of place in my usual state of slightly trendy punk fashion. But the thing that got me most about the spectacle of this crowd was that everybody seemed to be bringing in tons of Kentucky Fried Chicken. "Boy," I thought to myself, "these people sure do love eatin' chicken." The crowd, however, didn't eat much of the chicken that came in those familiar red- and- white buckets. The batter-fried delicacies, I found later on, during the performance of the band's song "8-Piece Box," were for throwing. Confused? Don't be. It's all part of the show, all part of the fun, and all part of southern culture. Southern Culture on the Skids, that is. With original members Dave Hartman (drums) and Mary Huff (bass/ vocals) from Roanoke, Va., and Rick Miller (guitar/vocals) from good ole' North Carolina, the band has more than enough roots in the deep south to bring photo courtersy of SCOTS.com Southern Culture rockin' out at a recent show. a little humor to their music. You may remember them from their catchy, unusual 1996 single, iWalk Like a Cameli or their contribution to the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" soundtrack. Their show is a mixture of twangy, Gene Eddy-inspired rock, trailer-trash camp, 50's retro fashion, Mexican wrestlers and, of course, fried chicken. And the band has as much fun playing dress- up as the audience, with Huff usually sporting a beehive, Miller with a trucking company related baseball cap and rebel flag shirts and Hartman in a bowling shirt and beatnik beret. Since the last time I saw the band, theyive added a keyboardist, Cousin Crispy (origin unknown). By all indications, he plays in nothing but a pair of Pointer brand overalls. To try and describe SCOTS (the official band-sanctioned abbreviation) any further g<v would take too many words. To compare them to any other band would be ghettoizing their sound too much. SCOTS is dropping by the Grey Eagle in Asheville this Friday in preparation for their next album, "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down," due out this Halloween. Even though some songs like "My Home Has Wheels" might hit a little to close to some audience members' own homes, the show is sure to be unforgettable. Doors open at 9 p.m., tickets cost ten. Southern Culture on the Skids WHERE: Grey Eagle, Asheville WHEN: Friday October 13, 2000 9:00 p.m. PRICE: $10.00
