Conference to emphasize writing English teachers and writers from across the state will gat" her here Oct 30 as the N.C. English Teacher's Association holds its fall conference at WCU. The program, which will feature participation by authors, teachers, and students, will emphasize writing skillSo John Parris, well -known author and columnist for the "Asheville Citizen," will speak at the association's luncheon, Parris is the author of a number o" books, including "naming the Mountains," "My Mou- ntains, My People," and "Mountain Brett" The program will begin at 9:30 a,m, with a general session presided over by Mitchell Hag- ler, faculty member of Central Piedmont Community College of Cnarlotte0 Morning activities will in" elude presentations by Dv. Fred Macintosh, English professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel H 11, anl Larry Tucker, consultant in language arts for the NX. Department, of Public Instruction, Dr, Macintosh will discuss teaching writing for the world's worK, and Tucker will speak on improving writing through short, elective courses. Most of the afternoon will be de voted to a panel on traditional and innovative approaches to jo-irnalistic and literary writing high schools. Panel moderator will b-3 D, Newton Smith, assisiant professor of English at WCU. Last year there were approximately 420 annuals left after everyone had received their 1970 CATAMOUNT, The staff decided to order the same am o.int for this year to avoid the waste, liie annual works on a fall delivery system. At the end of summer school, DelmarStu ■ dios is sent a list of all the seaiors who graduated in the spring and summer who are eligible to receive annuals, Del- nnr then ma'ls the annual to these people, Through some nvstake or carelessness on the part of last year's staff the wrong list was sent to Delmar. This list included the students receiving graduate degrees as well as graduating seniors. The 19711972 CA^AM'JUNT staff does not know exactly how many were given out by mis ■ take, bit it is making efforts to find out and get them back. They don't know when and if they will get the books back but somethin^more definite will be known Monday night. There are no funds available to purchase more annuals or to give refunds. Din Austell, in charge of appropriations for SGA stated that if any money was paid out it would have to come from this year's money because all of last year's has been spent. When questioned about a possible suit against the CATAMOUNT, David Harling SGA Public Prosecutor said that at this time he does not have a suit against the CATAMOUNT, He said that he would have to investigate the CATAMOUNT constitution and bylaws and would follow through if a suit was filed, H<> felt that it was "unfair to the students," Carolinian changes 'news brief9 policy Because of confusion, lost news briefs and stories that failed to be publisned in this newspaper, THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN is announcing a new policy on "News Briefs" items and "Contact" classified advertisements. Effective immediately, no "News Briefs" or "Contact" ads will be taken over the phone or by the Business Manager and Editor on campus, These items may be given to the News Editor, they may be mailed to P.O. Box 66, they may be sent to the newspaper office in Joyner by campus mail, or they may be dropped in the envelope attached to the outer door of the CAROLINIAN for this specific purpose, Editor-in-Chief W, Wat Hopkins reported that the new policy is being put into effect because several groups and individuals on campus have not had their items printed. In the scurry of publishing the paper, items have been misplaced and lost, usually because the staff did not know they were delivered at odd times and placed on various desks in the offi- C6S Hereafter "News Briefs" and "Contact" items will only be accepted in the above manners.
