  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN NEWS August 30,2000 August 22 At 8:09 a. m., a staff member reported the theft of a pair of athletic shoes from the locker room at Camp Gym which occurred between 11:00 a. m. on 8/22 and 6:30 a. m. on 8/23. At 1:15 p. m., a member of the faculty reported the theft of a paper cutter from the Math Department which occurred between 7/15 and 8/23. At 4:30 p. m., a vendor reported the theft of an extension cord from a copying machine in Helder which occurred between 8/21 and 8/23. August 23 At 2:25 p. m., a student reported that her purse had been stolen from a room in Coulter. Later, the purse was returned intact by a person who found it after she left it in a classroom. The report is unfounded. At 4:45 p. m., officers assisted a motorist who had run out of gas on Centennial Drive. At 5:45 p. m., officers cited a male non- student for speeding 44 in a 20mph zone on Centennial Drive. August 24 In District Court in Sylva, two students charged with felony possession of marijuana in May pled guilty to misdemeanor offenses. They were fined $ 100 and costs, ordered to pay $100 to the SBI lab for lab services, and placed on probation for one year. At 11:30 a. m., a parent from Forest City reported that his son was missing and believed to be in the company of a WCU student. Officers found the subject at Robertson Hall and notified the parent that he was alright. August 25 At 12:35 a. m., a student in Scott reported the theft of a cd player from the 7th floor lobby. August 26 At 1:10 a. m. on 8/26, a student reported that he had received a threatening e-mail message in Harrill Hall. At 5:40 p. m. on 8/26, officers referred a male student to Housing for an alcohol violation on the 3rd floor of Walker. At 7:30 p. m. on 8/26, officers cited a female student for an alcohol violation in Benton after the student lied about her age. At 3:35 a. m. on 8/27, officers responded with WCU EMS to the 4th floor of Leatherwood where a student was intoxicated and passed out in the bathroom. Referred to Housing. At 10:40 p. m. on 8/27, a student in Buchanan reported receiving harassing phone calls for several days. At 11:20 p. m. on 8/27, officers assisted local law enforcement after a student's vehicle was found wrecked on the Old River Road. The student was not located. Physical Plant Progresses on Summer Projects by Dawn N. Pasley News Editor During the summer, WCU's Physical Plant worked on many projects to improve the campus so that it better serves the needs of students. One of the more notable projects is the planning and preparation for the installation of a traffic signal for the intersection adjacent to Wachovia Bank. According to Andrew Comrie, director of the Physical Plant, the base for the light pole that will hold the traffic signal has been poured. Crews from the NC Department of Transportation are expected to arrive with the other components in a matter of days. Comrie said that traffic counts, counting both vehicles and pedestrians, have been performed and the necessity for something more than a blinking signal is apparent. A walk/ don't walk signal will also be installed, alerting pedestrians when it is safe to cross the street. The new signal will operate throughout all hours of the day and night, and will not revert back to a blinking signal at night. Work has continued during the summer on WCU's football field, and, according to Comrie, two crews will be arriving to roll out the new turf. The project should be completed by September 4 to allow the football team to practice in the stadium. The parking lot adjacent to Robertson Residence Hall has been repaved, and 20 new parking spots added by moving the fencing closer to the base of the water tower. "We wanted to do it last year, but we hadn't gotten the design completed," said Comrie. Sprinkler systems were installed in Harrill and Robertson residence halls, which had not previously had them, to ensure student safety in case of fire. Next summer, one will be installed in Walker Hall, and also in Benton Hall if there are reasonable bids from contractors. Site development was completed for the Fine and Performing Arts Center, which will be located adjacent to Belk Building. The land was raised from a floodplain and contoured to fit the building. The Physical Plant also irrigated the new intramural fields, which include football fields and baseball diamonds, through the use of a sprinkler system. The windows of Harrill Hall were replaced with new sliding ones similar to those that were installed in Scott last summer. The Physical Plant was also closely involved in the creation of the catamount sculpture located in Centennial Plaza. The campus architect was involved in the design of the statue itself, and employees of the Physical Plant constructed the rock base upon which it stands. ^ernMfe^ Music Classes for Children!
