  • June 28, 2000 SPORTS WESTERN 11 CAROLINIAN Lady Cats Basketball Reloading by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor In this the off-season before her first year as head women's basketball coach at Western Carolina, Beth Dunkenberger has been working hard establishing a staff and recruiting players to fill the gaps. Two assistant coaches have been signed, as well as two recruits signed to letters of intent this summer. Shellie Greenman and Teresa Brown were both added to the Lady Cats coaching staff, with Summer Thagard and Tiffany Hamm signing on to play for Dunkenberger. Greenman has coached at the Division I level for 12 years, including three years in Cullowhee coaching under Gary Peters in 1993 through 1996. She has also coached at Southern Conference rival, Chattanooga, and most recently at Miami (Ohio) University. Dunkenberger and Greenman go back further than WCU. While in graduate school at Virginia Tech, Greenman worked with the new head as an assistant for five years. "We are very fortunate to have someone with Shellie's experience on our staff. It is a huge advantage that she has worked at WCU and having worked together for five years (at VT), we share similar ideas on how we want to build this program," said Dunkenberger. Back in Cullowhee, Greenman will serve as the Lady Catamounts recruit- Attebery to Play on ing coordinator. Teresa Brown will round out the first-year coaching staff. The Albany, Ga. native's coaching experience includes head-coaching positions at Deerfield- Windsor High School in Albany, Ga., and at Athens Academy in Athens, Ga. A 1993 graduate of the University of Florida, Brown was an All-SEC Academic Team member from 1989-1992. She has also served as an assistant coach at Georgia State University for a year. "Teresa is an excellent teacher of the game who relates extremely well to the players," Dunkenberger said. "Not only has she coached at the high school and collegiate level, she also competed in the SEC as a player bringing a wealth of experience to our staff." Dunkenberger and staff have also been busy on the recruiting trail, signing two players for the 2000-01 season. Summer Thagard of Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville will add depth to the Lady Cats front line, while freshman Tiffany Hamm will be a major presence around the basket. The 6'3" Thagard was the first- player signed by Dunkenberger. Last season, she averaged 17 points, 12.5 rebounds, and six blocked shots a game. She was also a two-time all-conference selection. States Ail- Star Team Sports Information Western Carolina junior outside hitter Christy Attebery was one of 22 collegiate volleyball players selected to play on one of the United States All-Star teams competing in Sibillini Italian Tournament in Rome, Italy on July 2-8. The United States will send two, un- der-20 teams to the international tournament. Attebery was an All-Southern Conference player and All-tournament selection in 1999. She led the conference in kills per game with 5.32, setting a conference record. She also finished 13th in the nation in the same category. "Bring It" Promotions will sponsor the two US teams in the annual tournament, which will feature teams from Russia, Yugoslavia, Italy, and other European countries. Matches will be played on open courts in the mountain region of Marche. "Summer is a super player. She developed over the past four years like a coach hopes every student-athlete will," said Dunkenberger. "She has a great work ethic and is very coachable." Summer not only excels on the court, but also in the classroom, posting a 4.0 grade point average. Dunkenberger looked out of state for 6'0" forward Tiffany Hamm. The Harlan, Kentucky native is a three-time Region 13 Player-of-the-Year, averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds a game. She played varsity basketball since she was in the seventh grade. "Tiffany's versatility is a huge plus for us," said Dunkenberger. "She is a strong player who likes to bang inside while possessing a soft touch on her shot. She can also step out and hit the three." She added, "She played all five position for her high school team, and we'll look for her to play both the small and power forward spots at Western Carolina." Both players will be welcome additions to the front court. Having more size inside will help center Laura Echols and forward Kris Kent. Coach Dunkenberger, staff, and the Lady Catamounts will begin workouts in the fall, with their inaugural season at the helm beginning in late November. Catamounts Finish Second In Sportsmanship Award Voting Thomas Signs With the Atlanta Braves Sports Information Charles Thomas, a rising senior on the baseball team, has decided to forego his final year of eligibility and sign a professional contract with the Atlanta Braves. Thomas was taken by the Braves in the 19th round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Terms of his contract were not disclosed. The two-time All-Southern Conference player and 1999 batting champion led the Catamounts in hitting again this season batting .349. Thomas reported to Jamestown (NY) of the short season Class A New York-Penn league earlier this month, around June 13. The Asheville native becomes the third Catamount in the past two years to leave school early and pursue a professional baseball career. David Pember and Eric Johnson each signed professionally following their junior seasons in 1999. Sports Information The Southern Conference announced that Virginia Military Institute is the recipient of the 1999-2000 D.S. McAlister Sportsmanship Award. This marks the ninth time that the honor has gone to the Keydet program in the 21-year history of the award, more times than any other SoCon school. VMI received a cumulative ranking of 4.05 on a 5.0 scale in winning this year's award. The Keydets edged out Western Carolina (4.03) for first place, while Wofford (4.01) followed close behind in third. The Catamounts have won the award twice, 1986-87 and 1995-96. WCU is one of only five schools to capture the award with The Citadel, Davidson and Furman being the other three. The D.S. McAlister Sportsmanship Award was inaugurated in 1980 and is given annually to the Southern Conference institution that is judged to have exhibited the highest degree of sportsmanship, ethics and courtesy in the conduct of its athletic program over the past year. The award is named after the late Col. D.S. McAlister of The Citadel, who served as the Southern Conference's secretary-treasurer for 38 years. Athletic directors and head coaches from each athletic department vote on the award. 'BasketbalV\ Continued from back page. Peter Okwaiinga to national letters of intent to play basketball at WCU. Brempong hails from Thrornhill, Ontario, Canada where as a senior he averaged 17 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots per game. In a game last season, Brempong swatted 25 shots. "I'm very excited about Brempong. He's very athletic, has great hands, runs the floor well, and has an uncanny knack for blocking and altering shots," said Shurina. "I don't think I could play in a four foot league and block 25 shots. He's only scratched the surface." Shurina added, "Once he learns how to play and beefs up, the sky's the limit on how good he could be." Junior-college transfer Peter Okwaiinga will also don the purple and gold this season. The 22-year old Kenya native spent last season at Cochise Community College in Douglas, Arizona, where he averaged eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots per game. The 6' 10", 220 pound forward finished the season with over 100 blocked shots and 34 steals. Out of high school, Okwaiinga signed with Notre Dame, where he red- shirted his first year. He sat out the second season due to injury, then transferred to Cochise. Shurina said, "Peter is older, more mature and his experience at Notre Dame, as well .as leading his team to the junior college national tournament, will help him be a force in the Southern Conference." Brempong and Okwaiinga join IShurina's first signee, Emre Atsur and another junior college transfer, Willie Freeman.
