  • April 5, 2000 GET A LIFE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 11 Friends of Hunter Library to Hold Tri-Annual Book Sale by Johnnie Mickel Staff Writer Many of us remember those book drives that used to come around to our elementary schools when we were young. Usually those book drives helped sponsor some important materials that the library needed to help with your education. Well, something similar is occurring here at Western Carolina University beginning on April 7: the Friends of Western Carolina University's Hunter Library will be holding a book sale. The book sale occurs only once every three years, this being the fourth sale, said University Librarian Bill Kirwan. The books come from a combination of Hunter Library and members of the Friends of Hunter Library. Kirwan said that about half of this sale's books will be from private contributions given to the library while the other half will be from the library. This sale will feature over 4000 books. Many selections are from two exceptional collections that were recently given to the library. The 4000 books have a wide range of subjects: from art to history. Prices for books will be a dollar and up. The sale will begin on April 7 and end on April 10. Only members of the Friends of Hunter Library will be allowed in on the April 7 sale. However, for those interested in joining the Friends of Hunter Library and attending the April 7 sale, a table will be set up at the door so that they may join. Membership is $15 yearly, and with that you will be supporting Hunter Library, you will receive The Clarion (the library's newsletter), and you will be invited to the groups events, two of which will be at the end of April. Ten dollars of the fee is tax deductible as a contribution. "The Friends have helped the Library get microfilms of original documents, and helped us with preservation. They've helped with purchase original published documents on microfilm, many on Cherokee and Civil War History," said Kirwan. All money goes back to support Hunter Library to purchase research materials needed for education. After the Friends' night, the sale will open to the public. On Saturday, April 8, the sale will be from 10am to 5pm, 1 to 5pm on Sunday, April 9, and 1 lam to 5pm on April 10. The private members-only sale on April 7 will be from 7 to 9pm The sale will be located at the Auxiliary Gym in the Ramsey Center. ASL Accepting Submissions by Holly Rhodarmer Asst. Features Editor It is critical that artists are given the opportunity to display their work. This applies to all creators, not only art majors. This spring the Art Student League (ASL) is sponsoring its annual juried student show. The show is open to all undergraduates, regardless of ASL Show WHEN: Wednesday, April WHERE: Belk Gallery PRICE: VFREE! their major. All work submitted must have been produced during the 1999-2000 school year. The number of submissions is unlimited. An entry fee is necessary to pay the costs of the show. The cost to enter the first piece is $2, and $1 for each additional piece. Both two- and three-dimensional works are accepted. All genres are encouraged, including computer graphic design. Two- dimensional works should be ready to be hung. All paintings should be on hooks, or have a wire stretched across the back. Drawings and prints must be framed or be in the glass and clip format. 19 Three- dimensional works that are not freestanding, such as suspension pieces, must have a suspension kit entered with the piece. All book arts books must be able to be manipulated. The curators of the show are flexible, and can make special arrangements for works that are unable to fit guideline requirements, as long as the space can accommodate the breaches. Jada Hansen, who is organizing the show, comments that ASL would "greatly appreciate help from students and faculty in raising funds." The show is the sole responsibility of students, thus it is important that the student body supports this pertinent ^ endeavor. A drawing marathon will be the first fundraiser. This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 8, outside of the University Center. Art students who participate will draw non-stop for six hours. Other such fundraisers are desperately needed. ASL is also conducting a campus- wide search for a sponsor. Anyone interested can contact Jada Hansen at 631- 9638. The # 1 Thursday Night Hot Spot Is About To Get Better 77k?
