  • Valentines Members of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society are sending valentines to professors of their own choosing. These valentines are sent on behalf of these students and the honor society. Black books Hunter Library announced recently that it has received and processed 157 titles on Black history. The collection, which when completed will contain approximately 600 titles, is called the Black Heritage Library, and is published by Books for Libraries Press, Freeport, N.Y. The Black Heritage Library is based on the Negro Collection at Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn. Fisk was incorporated Aug. 22. 1867 and from its incorporation it has been concerned with the needs and problems of black Americans. Teaching awards Chancellor Robinson recently appointed an advisory committee to seek nominations for the Fifth Annual Distinguished Teaching Award. The committee, composed of 13 students and 13 faculty members, will solicit nominations and recommend candidates to the Chancellor. Nominees for the award will be solicited from students and faculty during the week of February 25-29. Students are strongly encouraged to make nominations at any of the polling places which include the round desk on the second floor of the University Center and the lobbies of Brown and Dodson cafeterias. Faculty nominations will be solicited in the individual departments. Finalists for the award will be chosen on the basis of nominations from both students and faculty. The Distinguished Teaching Award Committee will gather additional information from the finalists before making recommendations concerning the winners to Chancellor Robinson. Winners of the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award wiii receive a $250 cash prize, a $250 Patrons of Quality Scholarship given in their name, and a $500 allowance to be used at their discretion to increase teaching effectiveness. All teaching faculty in their third year of service or longer at WCU are eligible for the award with the exception of previous recipients. Previous winners of the Distinguished Teaching Award include Roger Bacon, Jerry Cook, Judy Dowell, Terry Hoyle, William Kane, Joe Meggs, Joel Milner, Gary Poole, Patsy Scott, Judith Stiilion, D.C. Sossomon. and Max Williams. P.R.'s to Mardi Gras The Pershing Rifles, WCU's precision drill team, is leaving today for the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The team, along with advisor Major Frank Valentine, will march in the Mardi Gras parade on Saturday and return to Cullowhee Sunday evening. The team has been practicing for the event for several weeks and was one of the few college drill teams in the nation to have been personally invited to appear in the parade. THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/February 14, 1980/Page 7 Citing the recently revived Experimental Resource Financing Program (set up to look into new sources of income for SGA) as "unjustifiable," the senate aided SGA President Roger McKinney and,.abolished tbf program. Henceforth, the duties of the ERF will be handled through the Office of Refrigerator Leasing. With an eye towards improving campus cafeterias, a six-member "Committee on Cafeteria Affairs" was approved by the senate; David Armstrong, Scott Davies, and Lisa Womack are currently the only members on the committee, and there is skepticism in the senate that such a committee will be effective. Previous senate committees on cafeterias met with little success, and there is a question whether the Chancellor's office will recognize the group: Dr. Robinson already has his own cafeteria committee. The senate approved Steve Nye as director of Refrigerator leasing, and Janie Hosier as associate justive on the traffic court. The resignations of Marty Reese and Tim McBride were accepted. Dead week By the end of Fall semester, 1980, WCU students will be able to enjoy "Dead Week" thanks to the efforts of the student senate at its February 11, 1980 meeting. ''Dead Week" will encompass the final week of class in each semester during which time, according to the bill, "No tests or other assignments are to be given." The purpose of "Dead Week" is to give students time to prepare for finals; as for this semester, compliance is doubtful since most professors have already issued class and testing schedules. Also on the academic side, the senate approved a resolution requesting, "Deans of the various schools to notify prospective candidates for graduation of their acceptance or rejection." Presently, students apply for graduation once they have reached ninety hours of credit; unfortunately, students are not informed by all departments of the status of their graduation applications, and "could just be wasting time.." as one SGA member put it.
