  • July 13,1995 Western Carolinian 16 Sp orts Hodgin Names Sandusky New Offensive Line Coach by Gary Leigh Staff Reporter E.J. Sandusky, 25, has been selected to fill the vacant position of Offensive Line Coach for the Western Carolina University football team. Sandusky is a former Penn State Center and Univer sity of North Carolina Graduate Assistant Coach. A native of State College, PA., Sandusky lettered twice and started at Center during his senior year at Penn State. While Sandusky was a member of the Penn State football squad, the Nittany Lions played in four bowl games. He received a Honda Scholar Athlete Award and Hitachi College Football Association Promise for Tomorrow Scholarship while he was an undergraduate finance major at Penn State. For the past two football seasons Sandusky has worked as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the University of North Carolina. He was heavily involved with the Tarheel recruiting program. Sandusky plans to complete a Master of Arts degree in Communication Studies this spring at WCU. WCU Head Coach Steve Hodgin says he selected Sandusky because of his "enthusiastic approach and strong work ethic, background in the Pro-1 Offensive, and impressive credentials gained while part of two outstanding college football programs." Whitewater Falls by Katherine Torrence Associate Editor Whitewater Falls is one of the area's most spectacular sights. Hikers should go to Cashiers and take a left at the stop light. Once on Hwy. 64 continue on until you enter into the Sapphire area. You'll see the Sapphire post office on the right. Directly after this Hwy 281 will be on the right. Whitewater Falls is located approximately 9 miles down Hwy. 281. There is a designated parking area on the left. After parking, walk up the path to the overlook to view the "white" waters of the falls. A trail to the left of the overlook leads a hiker to view the falls from the top. To the right of the overlook is a steep, vigorous hiking trail that leads to the lower Whitewater Falls and continues for many miles down into South Carolina. This trail is called The Duke Power Trail. This area will appeal to everyone. From campers to fishermen, mountain bikers to hikers everyone will find that this trail has much to offer. There are scenic spots on the river for campers, plenty of trout in the Whitewater River for the fishermen, rugged trails for bikers, and hikers will get much pleasure and exercise out of hiking through the mountains. Once at the bottom of the Lower Falls BEWARE, the hike back up (the only way out) is strenuous. Pack a picnic or snack and wear your hiking boots! ** Waterfalls have been proven to be very dangerous attractions so please watch your step around the falls and "be smart"! Enjoy these hidden treasures of the mountains, but please help us keep them nice. Always try to leave these areas cleaner then you found them. The animals will thank you. WCU Football Signs 24 Recruits to the '95 Catamount Teai by Tony Castleberry StaffReporter Believe it or not, football season is right around the corner and with an outstanding list of recruits along with several returning starters, WCU seems ready. A total of 24 signees have joined the squad for the 1995 season which starts September 2 at Clemson. Two fullbacks hope to make an impact in the Catamount backfield. Brad Hoover, a 6-0, 200 pound all-state selection from Ledford High School is one of them. Hoover led the state in rushing with 2,662 yards and scored 34 touchdowns while being named Davidson County and Central Carolina Conference Player of the Year. Chad McClure, from Hayesville High, is another strong running back. At 6-0, 230 pounds, McClure rushed for 1,501 yards and 13 touchdowns last season and as a running back/kicker was named All-Western and All-Smoky Mountain Conference. Perhaps the most exciting of all the offensive recruits is tailback Terence Stokes. The 5-9,185 pound Stokes from Bunn High School was the 1994 AP Player of the Year. Stokes set anew state record with 92 cerrer touchdowns, including 43 last season alone. He accumulated 2,273 yards rushing last season and finished his career with 5,121 yards. He was also named Capital Area 2-A Player of the Year as a junior and then again his senior year. On the defensive side of the ball, WCU is thin on experience at the linebacking and secondary positions. With the addition of 13 defensive signees, the Catamount defence should hold their own. Denver Walker, a 6-2, 245 pound defensive lineman from Starmount High School hopes to contribute to the defensive structure next season. Walker had 85 tackles and 13 sacks as a defensive end last season, while being named Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Michael Suddreth, 6-3, 270 pounds, was a Shrine Bowl participant as well as an AP all-state selection. Suddreth helped West Charlotte High win conference titles throughout his career, including an 11-1 season last year. The linebacking core will be boosted with the addition of John Scott. Scott, a 6-2, 210 pounder from Greer High School was a Shrine Bowl participant and first team all-state selection. He helped Greer to a perfect 15-0 record and a state 3-A championship in 1994. Another all-state selection that hopes to see some time in the Catamount secondary is defensive back Eric Johnson. The 6-0,180 pound defensive back from West Brunswick High helped his team to three straight Waccamaw Conference championships and a 1993 3- A state championship. Johnson was named all-conference, all-area, and participated in the Shrine Bowl last season as well. The Catamount Football program is making great strides to bring in the best student athletes available to play here at WCU. Get ready to support the Cats this Fall.
