  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN NEWS March 29, 2000 SERVICE LEARNING Continued from front Mitch Williams from Advancement and External Affairs, is working on creating a pilot program which will integrate service learning opportunities into some of the courses that will be offered in the near future, but the details have not been planned out quite yet. "I think the intent of the group is to try to do something next fall," said Caruso. "The actual nature of what is manageable and what isn't is kind of hard to determine at this point." Service learning opportunities are integrated into each individual course, and the nature of the services rendered by students are related to what they learn in the classroom. The members of the taskforce hope to get faculty involved in the program as well, to generate ideas for projects that apply service to academics. "This kind of adds to the whole learning process," said Dick Cameron. "Although there have been lots of folks who are involved with volunteer agencies and other sorts of programs, we've never made a commitment as a university to it."
