VOL.XXXIII NO.46 Thursday, May 2,1968 CULLOWHEE, N.C. WHG Vote Voided; New Election Set ARCHITECT'S CONCEPTION OF WCU'S NEW BUSINESS BUILDING Bids Submitted On Business Building A new School of Business building that is to be constructed at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee was designed by Foy and Lee Associates, Architects, of Waynesville. Z. B. Robinson Construction Company of Asheville was apparent low bidder on the new building. Robinson submitted a base bid of $719,000. Other apparent low bidders included: plumbing, Osborne Plumbing and Heating Company of Brevard, $33,000; Heating and air conditioning, R and W Inc. of Asheville, $137,424; electrical, M. B. Hayne's Electric Corp., Asheville, $79,434; AW30% jnsweit Q. To whom do we protest to get something done about the deplorable laundry situation? I am fed up with ruining my clothes and want to see if we can't have a choice as to whether or not we wish to use the laundry facilities, or at least get a paid refund for the damage done to our clothes. A. According to James Kirkpatrick, Director of Business Affairs, protests should be directed to Mr. Liner at the laundry. Paid refunds are made, and students should get a form for these at the laundry. Dorm students are required by school rule to pay a laundry fee and the only possible way to change this is to go through the Board of Trustees. Q. Isn't it illegal for the University to put salt petre in foods here? A. "Yes. It is against the pure food and drug act to add any type of chemicals to the food other than food stuffs. We do not use anything s of this type." This statement came from Stedman Mitchell, director of food services. Q. Will the holes in the pavement at the Reid Gym parking lot ever be repaired? A. James Kirkpatrick, Directorr of Business Affairs, stated that they will be repaird in the near future. Q. Why was a day student asked to leave the cafeteria for eating some ice cream a student offered him2 A. Eating off other peoples plates is against the rules. It is possible for a student to get enough food for two people and we just can't allow students who don't pay to come in the cafeteria and eat off other peoples' trays. And it costs us to clean up after that fella. CONTINUED Page 8 elevator, Southern Elevator Co. of Greensboro, $19,253. Bids were opened by the board of trustees building committee with J. Ramsey Buchanan of Sylva, chairman, presiding. All bids are subject to review by university officials, the N. C. Property Control and Construction Division and the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare before contracts are awarded. The new facility, housing all School of Business departments and the Western Carolina Computer Center, will be financed through state funds and federal grant funds obtained through the N. C. Higher Education Facilities Commission. • Best Professor Run-Off Set A run-off for the best professor award sponsored by Sigma Kappa Sorority will be held Friday in Stillwell and McKee classroom buildings. Several professors tied and for several there were only one or two votes difference. Also because of students "stuffing the ballot boxes" the runoff will require that the student sign his name and student number. The names to be listed on the ballot will include Trout, Curtin, Barnett, Scott, Herring, Carpenter, Latimer, Maturo, Sossoman, Chambers, Austin and Williams. Women's House Government elections held Monday were declared void by the elections committee at a meeting Tuesday. Voiding the election came as a result of confusion and problems arising from the election Monday in respective dormitories. Women students voiced protest against the election stating that because of announcements in the dormitories voting seemed mandatory. Polls were to be open from 9 until 5 but instead were held open until 8 p.m, in all dormitories because of poor participation in the voting. Polls were reportedly left unattended during the day. Consequently, the elections committee has reset filing and election dates, New filing dates are as follows: THURSDAY, MAY 2 1-5 p.m. FRIDAY, MAY 3 1-5 p.m. Filing both days will be held in the Student Senate Office, Election for WHG officers will be held Tuesday, May 6 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m, in respective dormitories. The election count will be held Tuesday, May 6 in Hinds Conference Room. Presidents of dormitories will be responsible for arranging and assigning hours that the polls will be operated. At no time may the polls be left unattended, and according to rules set up by the elections committee, those running for offices may not be left in charge of the polls. Women running in the first election included Nina Logan and Beverly Willis for President; Marge Ensing, Charlotte Ray and Janice Younts for Vice- President; Debbie Reil and Anita Allen for secretary-treasurer. These women must file again if they wish to run in the new election. Any other qualified dormitory woman may file for office if she so desires. Catamount Carrousel Now In Full Swing Of Trumpeter Al Hirt's appearance tonight in Reid Gymnasium will highlight Catamount Car- rousal activities now in full swing. Less than 10 years ago, Hirt was an unknown New Orleans musciam. He now owns the night spot in which he was discovered in 1959, and is one of the best known jazz musicians in the nation. Monday night saw the appearance of the Symbols, a well- known group from England who performed a dance and show at the University Center Ballroom. The All-Sing held in the ballroom Tuesday night is one of the most successful held during a May Festival, even though only nine groups participated. They include Phi Mu, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Xi Delta sororities, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Pi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternities and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Winners Pi Kappa Phi's "Ping Pongs," Delta Zeta and Alpha Phi Omega were judged by Bill Curtin, Clyde Appleton and Herbert Schulman. An art exhibit and sale beginning Tuesday and running through today displays talents of students and faculty alike. "The Importance of Being Earnest" opened Wednesday night and will continue through Saturday at the Little Theatre of Cullowhee. The cast includes Wayland Winstead, Robert Hollister, David Hirt, Vernon Smith, Buddy Davis, Elizabeth Bundy, Betty Cooper, Susan Magness and Kim Storrs, Joscfina Niggli is director.
