  • March 22, 2000 GET A LIFE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 17 Oscar Watch 2000 Australian Classic 'Proof' of Crowe's Ability by Joe Meigs Professor of English Since Russell Crowe has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar (for "The Insider"), viewers might be interested in seeing his performance in an earlier film. There is probably no better one than an Australian offering written and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse called "Proof," in which Crowe plays the part of a sensitive dishwasher caught in a dilemma which tests his honesty, not unlike the situation in "The Insider." The main character in "Proof," Martin (played by Hugo Weaving), blind since childhood, has always relied on others to describe for him what is taking place about him—except Martin has never trusted people giving the descriptions, even his own mother, for example when she describes a man raking leaves in the yard (since Martin cannot HEAR the man raking). Because of his distrust of her, he does not believe her when she tells him she is going to die, Martin rather believing that she -is merely trying to get away from him because she is ashamed of him. Because of his distrust for people's descriptions, he takes photos of his surroundings and then asks supposedly objec tive acquaintances to describe what is in the photos to him (smacks loudly of an existential distancing from reality, doesn't it). He could ask his cleaning lady, Celia (played by Genevieve Picot), for descriptions, but he does not trust her anymore than he did his mother (perhaps because Celia is a woman and thus reminds him of his mother). Incidentally, Celia is in love with Martin, but because he is cruel in his rejection of her (really making us think she is a surrogate for his mother), she retaliates by leaving obstacles, such as tables and lamps, in his way so he can trip over them, or by restraining his dog when he is calling for it. This is where Andy (played by Crowe) enters the picture. Andy is working in the restaurant that Martin visits (a restaurant in which Martin makes a scene in order to get service from a waitress, by deliberately missing his glass as he pours his own wine). Andy is a loner without a whole lot of purpose in life until he meets Martin, whose blindness serves as a catalyst for making Andy more observant about his own environment. Being with Martin also leads Andy into some comic moments, for instance, when the two of them hurry away from a fight at a drive-in movie (where Andy describes the movie to Martin), with LMP Presents: Women's Month Celebration 1 9§§ < '"'' ' ■ ■ ' .valid ID 4:120z Beers or 4:10oz Mne Colli Call LMP @ 7206 for more info Martin in the driver's seat and Andy trying to drive from the passenger's seat. They meet when Martin supposedly "crushes" an alley cat that Andy feeds, by stumbling over some refuse, under which the cat is eating. But the cat only seems to be dead, actually reviving when Martin takes it to a vet. Andy seems sufficiently trustworthy to become Martin's official photo describer, creating yet another form of male bonding movies like to depict. Complications to this bonding come as they often do when there are two guys and a girl (shades of Arthur-Lancelot- Guinevere!). Trustworthy Andy lies about a photo Martin has taken that shows Celia restraining Martin's dog while Martin is calling to it—assumedly because Andy wants to protect Celia from being discovered in her prank. Then Celia seduces Andy, which is fine until Martin discovers them together and then Andy discovers that Celia has photos of Martin plastered all over her living room walls. Crowe's Andy is a character who is sensitive to both Martin and Celia, even though they often are about as likable as the characters in "The River's Edge" or "The Ice Storm." But Andy does "see" the good in Martin and stays a friend to Martin, figuratively bringing Martin back to life much like the vet revives the cat. Crowe has a good part and handles it extremely well, preparing himself for even better parts, like the one in "The Insider." OUTDOOR* COM PAM V 570 W.
