  • PAGE 8/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/ FEBRUARY 1, 1979 MACES project kicked off at WCU Educational info available Educational information and counseling for adults is now available throughout the six southwestern counties of North Carolina under the Mountain Area Continuing Education Service (MACES), a new program with headquarters at WCU. Funded by a mix of federal, state and WCU monies the $44,978 MACES program has five specific goals. It will set up a clearinghouse for educational opportunities in the region, provide educational counseling for adults, identify unmet educational needs, advocate the cause of "lifelong" learning, and work with existing organizations through an advisory committee to provide new educational opportunities. Information centers will be located in the public libraries in Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties and in the Qualla Community Center. The centers will provide information about continuing education opportunities available to residents of the region, general career and educational material, catalogs from schools in the region, and information about educational financial aid. Project director is Dr. Hal Salisbury, WCU director of continuing education. Dave Waldrop, formerly a rehabilitation counselor with the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind, will serve as MACES counselor-coordinator. A native of Sylva, Waldrop holds bachelor's and master's degrees from WCU. Waldrop will visit each center periodically to meet with persons who have expressed an interest in educational counseling. A 14-member advisory committee will help MACES work with existing organizations. Members include Sandy Harrison, director of the Qualla library; Jim Barrett, educational specialist with the Bureau of Indian Affairs; Harry Jarrett and Kathryn Zachary, directors of continuing education at Tri-County Community College and Southwestern Technical Institute; and Dr. Jim Morrow, WCU associate professor of human services. Other members are Jeanette Newsom and Dorothy Carringer, librarians at Sylva and Murphy; Martha Palmer and Wayne Modlin, directors of Nantanhala Public and Fontana Regional libraries; and Mark Byles, associate director of the Fontana Regional Library at Bryson City. Four county extension chairmen—Ken Perry of Jackson. P. W. England of Clay, C. C. Bunn of Swain and Jack Early of Cherokee—also are members. Others assisting include Dr. Tom Westcott, WCU coordinator of counseling; Dr. Betty Siegel, dean of the WCU School of Education and Psychology; and a large number of faculty members from WCU, Southwestern Technical Institute and Tri-County Community College. Funding for the project includes $15,000 of federal money under Title I-A of the Higher Education Act of 1965, with the remainder divided equally between state funds and institutional matching funds from WCU.
