Model UN Team Wins Awards at App State by Johnnie Mickel Staff Writer Recently, WCU's Model UN members traveled to Appalachian State University for a competition and came home with three awards. The team was comprised mostly of sophomores and freshmen. The team, represented by Zach Edwardson and Becky Boisvert, won an excellent delegation award for portraying Malaysia. Rebecca Berrong, Jodie Pipe, Patrick Brown, and Robert Blankenship won two honorable mention awards for portraying the United Kingdom. Michael Lewis and Leslie Rae Newton's team represented the African country of Namibia. According to Dr. Brian Wright, the advisor to WCU's model UN team, the main purpose of the team is to "simulate the actions of the UN. The UN gives the opportunity for students to participate in a simulation of UN actions, an opportunity to debate in front of a large crowd." However, the team is not just for those in the law field or for those experienced in public debate: it is a group for everyone who wishes to stay on top of current events regarding the relations between countries. The United Nations is undoubtedly the world's premiere organization for international relations. Representatives from each nation must be trained in the art of debate, speaking, and remaining calm under great pressure. Also, they must be knowledgeable in international law and each country's customs and, in part, their beliefs, so that war is not begun by insulting someone by shaking their hand. Most students are probably asking "what does the United Nations and international law have to do with me? I've never left the country." Well in day- to-day lives it doesn't affect students, unless they are part of the Current Issues and Actions group here at Western, which is otherwise known as the Model UN Team. The Model UN is funded through the Student Government Association and is easy to become involved in. Anyone who has free time and is willing to speak in front of others, should contact the Political Science office, located in Stillwell 101, for more information. "[The Model UN is] an interesting event, and it allows students to interact on an intellectual level; they get to meet new students, they get to make friends," said Wright. The Model UN's next big event will be this spring, when they travel to Nashville. This event will be much bigger than the one held at Appalachian, with over 4,000 students expected to attend. The group even has the chance, should they reach the nationals, to go to the United Nations headquarters in New York. THE NEEDS WRITERS FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM. Try it. You'll like it.
