  • Page 2 SUTTON THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN From page 1. of the smallest and seemingly easy proposals were never acted upon by these faculty committees. It seemed that even such things as a new exit at Helder and Leatherwood was stalled for no reason to speak of, he said. And, to continue, Sutton pointed to the fact that something like milk machines in the dorms was also tied up in administrative "red tape". Many proposals are now four years old, and many have never really been officially reviewed by these committees. Throughout his address and remarks, Sutton expressed the hope that the students and faculty could work toward these proposals for the betterment of the total university. He went on to express his disappointment that he was unable to bring many of these things to pass. But, he stated, this was not the fault of the student government association. Students are to be responsible, he said, but such actions by the administration makes this idea impossible. In discussing the new disorder policy, he stated that he knew of it only a day before it was issued to the student newspaper. And, in regard to the black student demands, Sutton expressed his belief that student leaders should have been consulted on this, as it affects the total student population. He added that it was not his concern as to the demands themselves; however, it was a matter of principle and personal integrity to his administration and staff. In summing up his remarks to the students, he stated that he felt that co-operation was needed immediately. Without it, the university would find itself in a predicament. Sutton said that he thought the students were entitled to a statement from the administration. Questions were then answered from the floor. Several students were concerned with parking, others expressed their dissatisfaction with the faculty's response to the new absence policy, while others wanted Sutton's response to the black demands, the new activist movement, and various other problems and actions affecting the student body. "Dr. Pow and the administration must accept responsibility for student government to have the opportunity to become effective and to function," Sutton remarked. A petition was signed and issued to all in attendance and HENNING .From page 1 SUTTON GETS STANDING OVATION throughout the campus expressing several student grievances and calling for the acceptance of responsible student govern-' ment. Sutton concluded by saying that anything which affects the total university should be discussed with the student leaders, who represent the students. This, he said, was the sole reason for having student government. Responsible students demand a responsible administration, he felt. He issued a plea that the administration take note of these student grievances and issue some type of statement in answer to recent actions. The guide lines by which I will follow if elected and those that I have sought to follow in my past career have and will be student representation. As President of the day student body, 1 fought for a constitution which would give the voice of those students a hearing and proper representation in student government. If elected President of the Student Body, I will make the senate an active and vital force. I will increase the number of student refer- endums to gain the consensus of student opinion and then see that action complies with the opinion of the students. Thus, my guide line is GREATER STUDENT VOICE IN A GREATER STUDENT GOVERNMENT. 4. Concerning: STUDENT GOVERNMENT-- I believe that student government should be representational of all students and forceful in action on student needs. I do not believe in RED TAPE AND DELAY. I believe in gaining the consensus of the student body as frequently as is necessary to which the administration must listen. I will at all times strive to maintain cooperation and compatibility between administration and the students, but I will not relinquish nor resign from the task of obtaining the desires and the needs of the students, WOMEN REGULATIONS: I believe that they have to be updated, Administration—Faculty— Student Relations: I will strive for cooperation but will always keep the STUDENT first and foremost in my mind. STUDENT REGULATIONS: I believe they should be revamped to give the student the responsibility of being an individual and to draw these regulations into line with individual civil rights. DEMONSTRATION: I will back any group which has a sensible constructive idea which will benefit the University community. Thursday, April 17, 1969 PUBLICATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS: I will set up a board of inquiry to investigate and recommend how communications on this campus can be improved to aid the student and will then act upon these recommendations. PARKING AND TRAFFIC: Having served on the Safety and Security Committee I am acutely aware of the problems in this area. I would recommend the seeking of professional advice in this area and would strive to obtain this if elected. 5. I believe that the following points would improve the stu= dent government on this campus: 1. To increase the responsibility and action of the senators. • 2. To enlarge the presidential advisory board to gain the voice of the students. 3. To cut the red tape by forcing legislation out of committees and into ACTION. 4. To combat dissent by alleviating problems before they become explosive. 5. To improve the relations between administration and the student body. 6. To improve the communications between the students and the S. B. G. government through referendum and opening the office of the president for anyone's suggestions and r ecommendation s, 6. The major problems confronting students which I consider of immediate import are: 1. Women's rights - I will "seek immediate action upon the concensus of opinion taken from the referendum. 2. The housing of students both on and off campus are deplorable. I will seek to remedy these overcrowded and wnlivable conditions by investigation, recommendation and ACTION*. 7. I would like to see incorporation of the executive committee of the student senate as voting members of the faculty senate and the President of the student body as a voting member of the Board of Trustees. Also, I would like two presidental (sic) assistants with expanded re- ponsibilities whose appointment would be ratified by the Senate. CONTINUED PAGE 2. . .
